1880 - 225 Sparks Street, Ottawa, Canada. (see Sidney's notes)
Records from the Moravian church, in Bristol, show that Samuel was probably the wealthiest and most influential member of the congregation. He had a tallow chandler business (candle maker) and had several connections with the Quaker members of the Fry family in Bristol. The business was carried on by his descendants and is mentioned in the PIGOTS DIRECTORY for BRISTOL 1830 as FRIPP & Co. Soap & Candle Maker, 47 Castle Street, Bristol. A photograph of a mirror advertising FRIPPS soap has been supplied by Linda Gorski and can be viewed here.
The soap was also advertised in a pamphlet illustrated by Claud Lovet Fraser, titled "Diary of 1745". It was published in 1922 and its fictional contents purport to be selections from the diary of Samuel Fripp, the inventor of the product, describing the soap's course of development, which originated with his wife waking one morning with her face very fiery and blotched and in need of a remedy. The illustrations of period figures are fine examples of Lovat Fraser's later work. It was printed by the Curwen Press, Harold Curwen personally oversaw the arrangement of the colouring. The book is currently for sale (Jan 2007) valued at £110 (200 USD). See: http://www.ilab.org/db/book1585_16103.html
Steve Pepple from Buddenbrooks has kindly given the following details:
The book claims at the introduction to be extracts from a diary found by bricklayers in a cellar at Bristol in 1920, but then at the end fully admits that is not a true story; that there was no diary discovered by bricklayers, and that the extracts given are only "an amiable attempt at historical reconstruction." The entries seem to all be about the wonderful effects of his soap on his wife's complexion and the positive impact it has had on his community. The booklet appears to be purely an advertisement for Fripp's soap and is not meant to give a true account of Fripp's history. The illustrations are wonderful, but it is of no historical value.
The Moravian church, also known as the Unity of the Brethren, was established in England 1738 and was recognised by an act of Parliament as "an ancient Episcopal Church." It is interesting to note that the early Fripp settlers in South Carolina donated large amounts of money to the Episcopal Church. The congregation at Bristol settled on the Avon River 26 January 1755. Further details of the Moravian church can be found here. The church in Bristol was also know as the "New Jerusalem Church" in 1791.There are references to Samuel and his son, "Little Sammy", in diary entries by a labourer at the Moravian church in 1766 & 67. They were discovered by Val Peacock and are copyright to Bristol Record Society. An extract can be read here.
A lengthy obituary for Samuel may exist in the Moravian records at Bristol University. This could reveal some very interesting details of Samuel and his ancestors.

See: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bowlesfamily/john_bowles_of_eltham's_family_tree.htmEdward died before October 1800. He is mentioned as "my late brother Edward Bowles" in the will of Charles Bowles of Little Buckland, Hampshire, signed by Charles on 31 Oct 1800 and proved 27 July 1802, PROB 11/1377
The will is difficult to read, but it seems that Charles' estate was left to his wife, Ann, and her brother, Major General Harry Burrard, and also to his nephews Charles Bowles of Weymouth and Reverend Edward Bowles, clerk, sons of "my late brother, Edward Bowles".
The will also mentions his daughter, Caroline Ann Bowles, who married the poet laureate, Robert Southey.

Bridget and George are named in the will of their father, Dickson Downing, as his "two children". Some trees show another child.
The following article was found at:
http://www.jimvallance.com/02-family-folder/skrine-family-folder/ainley-walker-book/skrine-book-03.2-chptr-3-b.html
The article is mainly about the Skrine family, who also had family in Somerset & Lymington, Hampshire.
These facts have recently been made plain by the kindness of the Rev. Henry G. Downing Liveing.Richard Downing, second husband of Elizabeth Dickson, appears to have been the son of Captain Downing of the Guards, of whom mention is made in Pepys' Diary under the years 1666 and 1667. Their son, Dickson Downing, b. 1701, and bur. 6 July 1745, m. Bridget Baldwin, and had, with other issue, a s. George Downing, bapt.1727. George Downing became Prebendary of Ely, 1779; his wife was Catherine Chambers (d. 1802), daughter of Nathaniel Chambers of Grey's Inn, - barrister-at-law, belonging to a family of Kendal. George Downing, barrister-at-law, s. of the Rev. George Downing was b. 1762 and d. 1800. His wife was Mary Alston, b. 1761 and d. 1842. I have seen today, (Sunday) 21 June 1835, the house of Mr Edward Bowles Fripp named "Burfield Lodge" and that was the unique goal of my trip to Bristol.A description of the house is written in French and Euskara (Basque), which appears to describe a building in the style of a castle with gothic windows. The foyer is "L" shaped with an ornate window hidden behind pink silk curtains. The library occupies a whole side of the building, where the books are placed in shelved archways above decorated drawers featuring panels engraved with charts and curious stones and crystals from far off countries. The room has a beautiful carpeted hearth, tables of all sizes and large old leather upholstered chairs. The walls are covered in charts and portraits.
(A more complete and accurate translation would be very welcome)
I believe this is from a journal by Antoine d'Abbadie (1810-1897). A catholic astronomer and physician who spent 10 years exploring Ethiopia.A search for Burfield Lodge, by Richard F Sanders, indicates it was on the site of the Red Maids School and the only original building still standing is the Priory.
Edward also had a home in Hutton, Somerset, called Hutton Court. NOTE: This is could be Sutton Court, Somerset, which was the home of Sir Richard Strachey (mentioned above)
In 1836 he met William "Good Billy" Fripp, who had travelled to Bristol from his home in Beaufort, South Carolina. At present, there is no documented evidence of any relationship between William & Edward, but Edward's branch seems to be the mot likely connection. William's ancestor is said to have arrived in South Carolina between 1670-1690.On 7th September 1838, Edward wrote to William with news that his daughter, Maria, had passed away.
William's reply, on 17th November 1838, appears to be his first correspondence since his trip to England. He thanks Edward for the "urbanity and Christian Courtesy which was so liberally extended towards me by yourself and your relatives." He then apologises for his long silence, and for his procrastination in obtaining: "The Old Family Expositor, which I spoke of when in Bristol." He then regrets that his efforts in procuring information relative to his Great, Great Grandfather, who first settled in this Country has been unsatisfactory. He wrote "The Book contains nothing more than the records of the marriage of my Grandfather, John Fripp, with a few marriages of his children." He then gives a list of his grandfather's descendants. His grandfather was John Fripp III (1729-1781). It is clear that William had no knowledge of any previous generations.

On 7th September 1838, Maria's father wrote to William "Good Billy" Fripp, in South Carolina, USA, to say that his daughter, Maria, had passed away. William had visited Edward in 1836, so Maria must have died between 1836-1838. At present, there is no documented evidence of any relationship between William & Edward.

Early research shows Edward & Betty Bull as parents of Samuel Fripp (1723-1794) the soap boiler and tallow chandler of Norton St Philip and Bristol. However, it is presently uncertain how accurate this information is. Edward is shown as a son of Benjamin & Elizabeth, but he could be the son of Edward Fripp & Sarah Davisson, who married at Norton St Philip in 1667.

Edward was possibly buried 12 Mar 1750, at Norton St. Philip, Somerset (see F.H.O.L.)
