George Downing, son of Dickson of "Denmark Platea", London, gent. Wadham College, matric 18 May 1745, aged 16; BA 11 Feb 1748-49; MA 1751.Rector of Ovington & Tilsbury, Essex in 1761.
Item found at: http://wesley.nnu.edu/john_wesley/letters/1761-notes.htm
George Downing was chaplain to the Earl of Dartmouth, and Rector of Ovington, Essex, where the Wesleys visited him. Charles Wesley describes him as 'humble, loving, zealous Mr. Downing.' See Journal, v. 61, 105; Life and Times of the Countess of Huntingdon, i. 4-9; the next letter, and that of April 19, 1764.
George & Catherine's memorials at Ovington are transcribed in the book "The history and topography of Essex"
By Thomas Wright, in a section about Ovington. It is assumed that they are both buried here.In the church-yard, a handsome stone monument, enclosed by iron palisades, contains, on the south side, the two following inscriptions, side by side.
" In memory of Mrs. Catharine Downing, wife of the Rev. George Downing, rector of this parish; the best of wives, the best of mothers, and the best of Christians, who departed this life, Dec. 18, 1802, aged 70."
" In memory of the Rev. George Downing, M.A. 48 years rector of this parish, and the adjoining parish of Tilbury, and 30 years a prebendary of the cathedral church of Ely, who departed this life, 24th July, 1809, aged 81 years.
" His truly Christian deportment proved his meetness for the eternal inheritance purchased for all believers by that Divine Saviour who was the supreme object of his love and adoration."

John is said to have married Sarah Knight (not confirmed) and Mary.
The history and descendants of the Bowles family of Eltham can be found at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bowlesfamily/the_bowles_of_eltham.htm
Please visit the above website for full details and updates. The following note and some of the information about the Bowles descendants was obtained from the above website.
An interesting account of John's business and family was included in an article published in the "Copartnership Herald", Christmas 1935. See: See: http://www.mernick.org.uk/thhol/ratclif1.html
The article also claims that this is the same John Bowles mentioned as a companion of Samuel Pepys in his diary 27 May 1661 and elsewhere, although this has been disputed. John's brother, Phineas Bowles, did succeed Pepys as Secretary to the affairs of the Admiralty in 1689, so this does give credit to the claim above.
John Bowles, was the second son of Charles Bowles of Chatham who left him a substantial fortune on his death in 1659. John invested wisely in trade in the Mediterranean and greatly increased his fortune. His country residence was at Eltham and his town house was in Mark Lane, London.
In 1668, he became the financial backer for the first factory in Britain to manufacture "looking glass plates" which had previously been a secret of the Venetians and later obtained sole possession of the factory. He then built a larger facility at Ratcliffe in 1680 which the family operated for over 100 years until it was destroyed by fire in 1794. The factory manufactured "crown" window glass, each piece having a crown embossed in the centre of the pane.
John is said to have married Sarah Knight (not confirmed) and Mary, although I am presently uncertain which is the mother of Charles. The LDS (submitted) shows the marriage to Sarah as about 1674. If this is correct, Mary is probably the mother.

The following article, about Thomas Dunkerley, Grand Master of Freemasons, Essex mentions that George Downing of Lincoln's Inn & Ovington was his successor.
In June 1793, Dunckerley's successor, George Downing was invested at The Black Boy. Here
at 9.00 am. 100 brethren assembled, where a public breakfast was provided. At 10.00 am.
the Lodge was opened in the presence of 160 brethren (the lodges of Essex has petitioned
H.R.H. the Prince of Wales to appoint George Downing of Lincoln's Inn and Ovington) and
afterwards l80 brethren proceeded to church and a collection of £12 was made; the day ended
with a dinner in the Shire Hall.See: http://www.southchurch.mesh4us.org.uk/pdf/dunkerley.pdf
It is assumed the article refers to this George Downing, as he was a barrister and his father was vicar of Ovington
