NOTE: This tree is a "work in progress". Many of the notes are incomplete and some links will not work correctly, especially when inside a Scrapbook. I still have much data to add and apologise to those contributors whose information has not yet been added. My sincere thanks to all.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist or conflict with other sources. Individuals with uncertain details have a (See Notes) label attached to their name.

Any photos will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. These allow only a limited amount of text so I will be adding feature pages containing more detailed notes, photos and links. These will appear at the right of the Scrapbook links. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You can use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically excluded, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

Edward Bowles Driffield

In 1907, Edward published "A History of the Driffield family, from 1537 to 1903" : with notes of those of the name living prior to 1537. The Driffield pedigree was first researched by his great uncle, Vero Gurdon Driffield, and then continued by Vero's brother, Charles Edward Driffield (Edward's grandfather), both of whom died at an early age. Their research was continued by Edward's 1st cousin, Frederick Vero Driffield, and then completed by Edward.

The compilation is out of print, but copies may be found by searching online book stores. A digitised copy can be viewed at the Patriot Library

Edward was educated first at a school kept in Oxton, Birkenhead by a certain Mrs Spence from 1887 to 1890; at Birkenhead School from 1890 to 1895; and at Shrewsbury School 1895 to 1897. On the 13th October 1897 he was articled to Mr Walter Edward Bateson, Solicitor of Liverpool, and was admitted a Solicitor on the 19th December 1902, and a Notary Public on the 21st January 1904.

Rev. Charles George Thomas Driffield

Vicar of Prescot from Jul 1815 to Dec 1847.

NOTE: His assumed father, Rev. Walter Wren Driffield, was Rector of Erwarton, Suffolk in Feb 1773. This is about the time that Charles was born, so it is likely that he was born there.

Extract from the London Gazette, August 17th 1848
At the Court at Osborne House, Isle of Wight, the 11th of August, 1848. Present: The Queen's Most Excellent Majesty in Council. "Your Majesty's Commissioners for building new churches beg leave humbly to represent to your Majesty, that, when the last census was taken the Parish of Prescot...... contained a population of 35,902 persons; that besides the parish church, which will afford accommodation to about 6,825 persons, including 1634 on free seats; that a new church, which is about to be consecrated by the name of Saint Nicholas Church has lately been built at Sutton in the said parish of Prescot, and it is estimated that the same will accommodate about 400 persons, nearly all on free seats.

"That the vicarage...... Of the said parish of Prescot is now vacant, by reason of the death of the Reverend Charles George Driffield, Master of Arts, the late Incumbent thereof. "Your Majesty's Commissioners having taken into consideration all the circumstances of the said parish of Prescot, it appears to them expedient, that the parish should, during the vacancy.... and before the consecration of the new said church at Sutton as aforesaid, be divided into two distinct and separate parishes.... Under and by virtue of the power and authority contained in the sixteenth section of an act, passed in the reign of His late Majesty King George the Third. "That the ancient parish church at Prescot should remain the parish church of the said parish of Prescot, and that the said new church at Sutton should, on consecration, be and become and remain the parish church of the said parish of Sutton: "That the consent of the Right Reverend John Lord Bishop of Chester (as bishop of the diocese), has been obtained to the proposed division and also the consents of the Provost and Fellows of King's College; Cambridge, as patrons of the said parish or vicarage of Prescot aforesaid. Her Majesty having taken the said representation into consideration, is pleased, with the advice of Her Privy Council, to approve thereof and to order as it is hereby ordered, that the proposed division be accordingly made, and that the recommendations of the said Commissioners, in respect therto, be carried into effect; and Her Majesty by and with like advice, is further pleased to direct that this Order be forthwith registered by the Registrar of the Diocese of Chester.
