NOTE: This tree is a "work in progress". Many of the notes are incomplete and some links will not work correctly, especially when inside a Scrapbook. I still have much data to add and apologise to those contributors whose information has not yet been added. My sincere thanks to all.I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist or conflict with other sources. Individuals with uncertain details have a (See Notes) label attached to their name.
Any photos will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. These allow only a limited amount of text so I will be adding feature pages containing more detailed notes, photos and links. These will appear at the right of the Scrapbook links. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You can use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.
Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically excluded, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.
If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster
William is not yet linked to the main tree, but is included as he could possibly be the father of Edward Fripp c.1616 of Chitterne, who married Mary Merewether at Chitterne about 1649.
William's son John (bap.1623) could be the progenitor of the Fripp family in South Carolina, USA. Fripp Island, nr Beaufort, SC., was named after him.
Research by John's 7x grt grandson, William Edward Fripp (1896 - 1965) reveals the following quote from W.C. Fripp, Jr. of London:
"Capt. John Fripp was a privateer in the service of the King and the grant was the price paid for his sea ventures in favour of the King, previous to the Restoration. The grant was for a vast tract of land in the latitude of St. Helena Island. The grant afore-mentioned was engrossed on heavy parchment or vellum, and was from Charles II dated 1662 and bearing his seal.W.E. Fripp wrote that he had seen the grant "with his own eyes". This information is supplied by Paul Willis Steadman, grandson of W.E. Fripp, who is currently (2004) making efforts to locate the grant.
The grant was in the possesion of Evelyn Fripp (1858-1901), the only surviving child of James Thomas Edings Fripp (1822-1862) and Elizabeth Amelia Fripp (1826-1867). She was raised by her uncle, William Oliver Perry Fripp, after her parents died, and never married. After her death, in 1901, a Miss Barnwell took possession of her records. Mrs. Cuthbert B. Fripp, who was living and aged 90 in 1963, said she had also seen the Grant, then in the possession of Mr. William Elliott, Esq. (Atlanta).
Paul recalls that the land grant with a wax seal was sold in the 1950's to an art collector in Atlanta, GA. His grandfather's notes stated that he tried to reacquire the grant in the early 1960's, but the gentlemen in Atlanta did not wish to sell it. This gentleman was probably William Elliott, Esq. who has since died.
William Edward Fripp was a well respected historian and genealogist who was cautious of "legend vs fact" and only recorded details that he could reasonably document. He is documented in the "ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY" (new series) edited by Edward N. Dodge v. XXXIX Page 275. and is featured here
