NOTE: This tree is a "work in progress". Many of the notes are incomplete and some links will not work correctly, especially when inside a Scrapbook. I still have much data to add and apologise to those contributors whose information has not yet been added. My sincere thanks to all.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist or conflict with other sources. Individuals with uncertain details have a (See Notes) label attached to their name.

Any photos will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. These allow only a limited amount of text so I will be adding feature pages containing more detailed notes, photos and links. These will appear at the right of the Scrapbook links. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You can use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically excluded, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

The Fripp family of South Carolina

Notes

Thomas Burton

Extract from an article in the Beaufort Gazzette 19 Oct 2003

Thomas Burton
The Burton family name goes back to the early days of Beaufort history, and with a plantation just north of Beaufort. In the early 1900s, some maps had a dot standing for the village of Burton, on the old Shell Road, now U.S. 21. Direct Tax maps and records misspelled the name as "Button Hill."

Thomas Burton was a colonial planter as well as one of the early settlers of the town of Beaufort. In 1727, he was elected a vestryman of St. Helena's Church. In the 1740s, Thomas Burton purchased a 250-acre plantation located on or near the present-day Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort.

A daughter, Mary, married Robert Wilkinson, also of Beaufort, and a daughter of that marriage was wed to Capt. John Laboularderie DeTreville in St. Helena's Church in December 1778. Capt. DeTreville was then an officer of the Continental Army, commanding the Beaufort Artillery of Beaufort.

St. Helena's parish register
St. Helena's parish register has the entry "Burton, Mary, Daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth, Born Apr. 24, 1733; Bapt. June 10, 1733 by Jones; Parents sureties. Married by Lewis July 6, 1757 (to) Robert Wilkinson, Bach. Buried Nov. 17th, 1774 and 41 years."

The same register has the entry "De Treville, John Laboularderie, born at Louisburg, 26 Jan. 1742, bapt. Jan. 28, 1742, married 27 Dec. 1778, Sarah Wilkinson." Another entry reads, "Wilkinson, Sarah, Daughter of Robert and Mary (Burton) born Nov. 8, 1761, married by Gourlay 27 Dec. 1778, John Laboularderie DeTreville."

1740 Letter
In 1740, Thomas Burton wrote a letter from Beaufort to his brother, "living in Whithaven in the County of Cumberland, Old England," dated Oct. 21. Referring to an ill-fated expedition led by Gen. James Oglethorpe for which the general was blamed by most Carolinians, Thomas Burton wrote, "At present, we are in this place very much exposed to our enemies and little or no defense for ourselves. We have a fort, which formerly had a company of men, but since the Expedition the general keeps all the men at St. Simon in the colony of Georgia, except the captain and Ensign and about five or six men." The original letter is still preserved by the S.C. Historical Society and was brought to Beaufort some years ago for a brief showing by the society.
