I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist or conflict with other sources. Individuals with uncertain details have a (See Notes) label attached to their name.

Any photos will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. These allow only a limited amount of text so I will be adding feature pages containing more detailed notes, photos and links. These will appear at the right of the Scrapbook links. William Eddings Fripp

NOTE: Some trees show William as the father of James E. Lawrence Fripp and William Oliver Perry Fripp. Most people believe that they were sons of William's brother, James Fripp, but this issue should be investigated further to determine which version is correct.

Martha Fripp Edwards

It is not yet confirmed that the Martha Edwards who married William Eddings Fripp is the same Martha who married Dr Berners Barnwell Sams, but does seem likely.

Some trees record Martha married to a Mr Fripp before her marriage to Berners Sams, and show she was born about 1800, which is the correct age. The marriage entry to Berners Sams should show if she was previously married. Any official confirmation would be appreciated.

Assuming she is the same person, in 1830, a year befor her marriage to Berners, she would have been a widow named Mrs. Martha Fripp Fripp. So is probably the Mrs. Eddings Fripp aged 30 - 40 on St. Helena in 1830. The 16-20 year old female could be her niece, Laura Eliza Fripp, who is known to have been living with Martha when she was Mrs. Berners Sams.

The two males, 10-15, are claimed by some to be William Oliver Perry Fripp & James E. Lawrence Fripp, who most people believe were sons of William's brother, James.

1830 Census: St Helena Parish, South Carolina (courtesy of Ed A. Fripp III) Ed-092
2 males 10-15 (Some believe these are W.O.P & J.E.L Fripp, either as sons or nephews)
1 female 15-20 (Possibly Laura Eliza Fripp - Niece)
1 female 30-40 (Probably Martha Fripp Edwards)

1850 Census (November): St Helana Parish, Beaufort, South Carolina
Berners B. Sams, 63, Physician & Planter, b. SC. (Value 5,000)
Martha F. Sams, 51, b. SC
Donald D. Sams, 30, b. SC
Franklin F. Sams, 27, b. SC
James J. Sams, 25, b. SC
Robert R. Sams, 23, b. SC
Horace H. Sams, 21, b. SC
Barnwell B. Sams, 15, b. SC
Charles C. Sams, 13, b. SC
Elizabeth E. Sams, 17, b. SC
Adelaide A. Sams, 14, b. SC
Sarah S. Sams, 11, b. SC

Oliver Perry Fripp

Some believe this is Captain William Oliver Perry Fripp, who was aged 42 in 1861, but the age is 6 or 7 years out, unless he was baptised late. If this were true, he probably would have been baptised on the same day as James E. Lawrence Fripp, who is also said by some to be a son of William and Martha.

However, most people believe that W.O.P & J.E.L. Fripp were sons of William's brother, James.

If Oliver Perry Fripp was born (and baptised) in 1826, he probably died in infancy, as he does not appear on the 1830 census, or any later records.

1826 is also the same year that Oliver's father died.

Charles Edward Fripp

Mary Ann Rivers

Notes from James Tison:
Mary died December 4, 1819, aged 18 years, 11 months, and 18 days. The PAF Date Calculator produces a birth date of 17 Dec 1800.

Mary and Charles are buried in the churchyard of St. James Church, James Island, SC.

James Thomas Eddings Fripp

It appears that James was once in posession of the original 1662 Fripp Land Grant on heavy parchment with the seal of Charles II. His daughter, Evelyn Fripp, is reported to have shown Rebecca Margaret Linley (grandmother of Edgar Allen Fripp III) the grant in 1900.

He was severely wounded in the Civil War, during a Yankee raid on Combahee River on the 2 June 1863, and died 11 days later. A letter was sold on eBay on 27 Jan 2008, which was written by his brother, William Oliver Perry Fripp, on 26 Feb 1864, 8 months after James' death. An extract appears below: (Courtesy Ed A Fripp III) Ed-184

A year before he was killed, James wrote an interesting letter to Josiah Ware, whom he had purchased a horse from. He describes how the Yankees had taken his home and he was now exiled. He also makes brief comments on current situation during the war. The letter was sent from Greenspond Station, Fort Charleston on 18 Feb 1862.

Details of a letter written by WOP Fripp (brother of JTE) on 26 Feb 1864, sold on eBay 27 Jan 2008
Detailed letter from William O. P. Fripp to James R. Pringle, prominent Charleston Commission Merchant and Financier. Discusses the death of his Brother James T. E. Fripp who “lost his life in the defense of his country” June 2, 1863. He notes that he is the executor of his brother’s estate and that he (James Thomas) leaves a widow and three orphan children.

Although not in the letter, the children became real orphans when Mrs. Fripp died after the War in 1867. The letter discusses the use of monies in Confederate Bonds. After he mentions that James lost his life, he quotes a specific law that provides money to widows and minor children. He ends with a request of Mr. Pringle to let him know if he (Pringle) can handle these matters for him.

This must have been a very hard and sad letter for William to write, as his Brother had been killed June 2, 1863, only a few months before this February 26, 1864 letter. I would guess this letter would have been sent while the will was being settled in Probate Court. Letter is excellent condition with only small quarter inch tear in fold at top. On light blue lined paper measuring 12.75 by 7 inches.

The seller of the letter was from James Island. It sold for $162.

Ann "Evelyn" Evelina Fripp

Evelyn Fripp was adopted by her uncle, William Oliver Perry Fripp, after the death of her parents.

In 1900, she is reported to have shown Rebecca Margaret Linley (grandmother of Edgar Allen Fripp III) the original Land Grant of 1662, left to her by her father, on heavy parchment with the seal of Charles II.

The following note was recorded by William Edward Fripp (1896-1965) and forwarded by his grandson, Paul W. Steadman:
Evelyn Fripp (1858-1901), daughter of James Thomas Edings Fripp (1822-1863) and Elizabeth Amelia Fripp (1826-1867) was their only surviving child. She never marrried. After her parents death, she was raised by her uncle, W.O. P. Fripp. At the time of her death, Evelyn had the original Land Grant made by King Charles II to John Fripp in 1662, granting land in the latitude of St. Helena. The grant was on heavy parchment or vellium with the King's seal. After her death, a Miss Barnwell took possession of her records. Mrs. Cuthbert B. Fripp now living (1963) age 90, said she has seen the Grant, then in the possession of Mr. William Elliott, Esq. (Atlanta). What became of it since Mr. Elliott's death we do not know."

It is thought that Mr. Elliott was an attorney & art collector from Atlanta, GA., who bought the grant in the 1950's. William Edward Fripp's notes stated that he tried to reacquire the land grant in the early 1960's, but the gentlemen in Atlanta did not wish to sell it.

James Fripp

Death details from SCHSM Vol.36 (Courtesy Ed A. Fripp III - Ed-187)
James Fripp Sr. of St Helena d: 22 November, 1845, age 55 years, 17 days
Mary Pope Fripp his wife d: 2 November, 1854, age 59 years, 6 months, 9 days.

NOTE: The book "Tombee" has James born 1793 - died 1848. The birth year was probably calculated from his age at death, and the 48 & 45 could easlily be confused, but which is correct? I have given both dates until either is confirmed.
