I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist or conflict with other sources. Individuals with uncertain details have a (See Notes) label attached to their name.

Any photos will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. These allow only a limited amount of text so I will be adding feature pages containing more detailed notes, photos and links. These will appear at the right of the Scrapbook links. The Fripp family of South Carolina

Notes

James Fripp

Death details from SCHSM Vol.36 (Courtesy Ed A. Fripp III - Ed-187)
James Fripp Sr. of St Helena d: 22 November, 1845, age 55 years, 17 days
Mary Pope Fripp his wife d: 2 November, 1854, age 59 years, 6 months, 9 days.

NOTE: The book "Tombee" has James born 1793 - died 1848. The birth year was probably calculated from his age at death, and the 48 & 45 could easlily be confused, but which is correct? I have given both dates until either is confirmed.

Found on Website: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/Huguenot/2000-07/0962850809 (Re. Sams graveyard)

James Hann Fripp /infant son of J.E.L. and E.E. Fripp/ who was born January the 31st 1812/ and departed this life July 29th 1813/aged etc.

William Oliver Fripp/ infant son of J.E.L. and E.E. Fripp/ who was born the 31st day of January 1812/ and departed this life on the 17th day of September 1813/ aged etc.

Twin grave: The grave of Lawrence Fripp/ infant son of J.E. L. and E.E. Fripp/ born May 1, 1854/ Died June 22nd 1854/ The grave of Joseph Pope Fripp/ infant son of J.E. L. and E.E. Fripp/ Born May 28, 1855/ Died August 7, 1855/

NOTE: the first two sons could be this James; if so who was E.E. (Fripp)? The twins were probably sons of James E. Lawrence Fripp and Evelina Sams

Mary Pope (See Notes)

It is possible that POPE was Mary's middle name. She is shown on the 1850 census as Mary P. Fripp, and her death notice describes her as Mary POPE Fripp. It has been suggested that her maiden name was Perry, although she was only the Step-mother of William Oliver Perry Fripp

Death details from SCHSM Vol.36 (Courtesy Ed A. Fripp III - Ed-187)
James Fripp Sr. of St Helena d: 22 November, 1845, age 55 years, 17 days
Mary Pope Fripp his wife d: 2 November, 1854, age 59 years, 6 months, 9 days.

1850 Census: St Helena Parish, South Carolina (Ed-185)
MARY P FRIPP, F-55
J. T. E. FRIPP, M-24
S. E. A. FRIPP, F-20
This appears to be the second wife of James Fripp (deceased) with his son and wife. There is some confusion with her name as she is referred to as Mary Pope Fripp, it is uncertain if POPE is her middle name or maiden name. Some believe her maiden name was PERRY.

Euginia Amanda Perry Fripp

Transcript from SC Historical Society Magazine, Vol. 30: Courtesy Ed A. Fripp III (Ed-187)
Euginia Amanda Perry, daughter of James T.E. Fripp and Mary Pope Fripp
Born 27 April, 1836, died 22 September, 1845

The parents appear to be the father of James Thomas Eddings Fripp with his second wife, Mary Pope, as JTEF Jr would have only been aged about 13/14. This indicates that father & son both had the same 3 forenames, although the father is usually documented with just the first name.

Page 368 in the book "Tombee" has Tom Chaplin's diary entries for the illness and death of Euginia Fripp in September 1845. He says she is the only daughter of Mrs. J. Fripp, wife of James Fripp. However, the author of the book, Theodore Rosengarten, has noted that James' wife is Caroline Eddings Sams, daughter of Lewis Reeves Sams & Sarah Fripp.

The James Fripp who Theodore claims was the father of Euginia was born 20 Dec 1811 and died 27 Jun 1880. He was a son of Isaac Perry Fripp & Mary Pope. He married Caroline Eddings Sams on 25 Sep 1838 (2 years after Euginia was born).

Diary entries from "Tombee"
20 Sep 1845 - James Fripp's little daughter not expected to live with the scarlet fever.

21 Sep 1845 - J. Fripp's daughter Euginia at the point of death, with scarlet fever, some little better this evening.

23 Sep 1845 - James Fripp's daughter, and Mrs. J. Fripp's only daughter Euginia, died last night about 12 o'clock. Funeral took place this evening at 4 o'clock. Rev. W. Hall officiated. I did not attend - or any of my family. She died of scarlet fever, only a few days sickness.

The last entry shows that Euginia was Mrs Fripp's only daughter, but was not James' only daughter. Inferring that James had at least one daughter by a previous marriage. All of this seems to confirm that Theodore had named the wrong James as her father.

Martha Fripp Edwards

It is not yet confirmed that the Martha Edwards who married William Eddings Fripp is the same Martha who married Dr Berners Barnwell Sams, but does seem likely.

Some trees record Martha married to a Mr Fripp before her marriage to Berners Sams, and show she was born about 1800, which is the correct age. The marriage entry to Berners Sams should show if she was previously married. Any official confirmation would be appreciated.

Assuming she is the same person, in 1830, a year befor her marriage to Berners, she would have been a widow named Mrs. Martha Fripp Fripp. So is probably the Mrs. Eddings Fripp aged 30 - 40 on St. Helena in 1830. The 16-20 year old female could be her niece, Laura Eliza Fripp, who is known to have been living with Martha when she was Mrs. Berners Sams.

The two males, 10-15, are claimed by some to be William Oliver Perry Fripp & James E. Lawrence Fripp, who most people believe were sons of William's brother, James.

David A. (or S.) Fripp

The book "Tombee" has his middle initial "S", possibly for Scott, but this is almost certainly David A. Fripp. The "A" is probably after his father, Archibald.

James Fripp (See Notes)

NOTE: Some trees show this person as James E. Lawrence Fripp, but he was born about 1817 (see census returns) and died in 1864. He married Evelina Eddings Sams, who was Caroline's 1st cousin.

The book "Tombee" has Tom Chaplin's diary entries for the illness and death of Euginia Fripp in November 1845. He says she is the only daughter of Mrs. J. Fripp, wife of James Fripp. However, the author of the book, Theodore Rosengarten, has noted that James' wife is Caroline Eddings Sams, daughter of Lewis Reeves Sams & Sarah Fripp.

Other reports, in SCHSM Vol.64, show that James & Caroline only had one child, Mary S. Fripp.
And another note from Marshall Shore, claim they had a son, Clarence, and another daughter, Caroline.

These conflicts are being investigated, but until further notice, I will assume that James & Caroline had one child (Mary S.) and that Euginia was the daughter of James Fripp & Mary Pope, quoted in SCHSM as James Thomas Eddings Fripp (Sr). (See the notes of James Fripp, father of James Thomas Eddings Fripp)

Notes by Marshall B. Shore:
Children of James and Caroline were Clarence Augustus, m Nancy Patterson Burkett; Caroline, m Hill Cory.
