NOTE: This tree is a "work in progress". Many of the notes are incomplete and some links will not work correctly, especially when inside a Scrapbook. I still have much data to add and apologise to those contributors whose information has not yet been added. My sincere thanks to all.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist or conflict with other sources. Individuals with uncertain details have a (See Notes) label attached to their name.

Any photos will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. These allow only a limited amount of text so I will be adding feature pages containing more detailed notes, photos and links. These will appear at the right of the Scrapbook links. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You can use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically excluded, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

Thomas Benjamin Fripp

From Family Bible of William B. Fripp, 1835 Issue
Courtesey of Virginia Fripp-Whatley-Shaffer, via Ed A. Fripp III

Thomas Benjamin Fripp, son of Wm & Eliza born June 24th 1829
Baptized by the Rev Joseph Walker

NOTE: LDS has Thomas B Fripp's mother as Ann, but she was his 2nd wife.

Thomas was killed in the Battle of Pocotaligo, 22 October 1962 whilst on a mission to destroy the railroad & bridges in an effort to stop the advancing enemy.

The following is a small section of an account of the battle which refers to the death of Thomas. The full account can be found here http://www.researchonline.net/sccw/cmh/cmh105.htm

The destruction of several bridges over marshes and creeks, which are numerous in the tidewater section, so impeded Colonel Johnson that he dismounted his men, and thus moved three companies in line to within 130 yards of the boats and fired on the troops as they embarked. The gunboats returned the fire, and a gallant soldier, Private Thomas B. Fripp , was killed, and Lieut. T. G. Buckner and Corp. Thomas Farr wounded.

When the train was fired upon and the engineer killed, the conductor, Mr. Buckhalter, with coolness and courage, ran his train on in the face of the ambuscading party. Thus ended the expedition to destroy the railroad and bridges on the Charleston line.

Walker lost 21 killed, 124 wounded, 18 missing; total, 163. Brannan's loss reported was 43 killed, 294 wounded, 3 missing; total, 340. Colonel Walker closed his report of the battle of Pocotaligo by commending in highest terms the conduct of the whole command, mentioning particularly Capt. H. J. Hartstene, naval aid; Capt. W. W. Elliott, ordnance officer; Capts. John H. Screven and George P. Elliott; Corp. D. L. Walker, and Privates Fripp and Martin and E. B. Bell, all of whom served on his staff. R.M. Fuller and the Messrs. Cuthbert, father and son, serving on the staff, rendered efficient service to the colonel commanding.

The battle over, and the enemy safe on his gunboats, ample reinforcements arrived from Hagood and Gist, and from Savannah, but too late to do more than congratulate Colonel Walker and his heroic and victorious troops.

Thomas owned a plantation on St. Helena which was confiscated and sold to Negroes during the Civil War. He was Captain of Light Dragoons in that war, served under General Robert E. Lee, then was killed at Bee's Creek near Coosawhatchie Courthouse, SC in 1862. His wife and 3 small children had fled St. Helena, in 1861, to refuge at his brother's plantation, Chelsea. Ellen Chisolm Fripp died on March 15, 1894.

Dr. Charles Edward Tennent MD

A detailed history of the Tennent family can be found in "Light In Darkness", published by Mary Alice Tennent, and held at the Historical Society Library, Charleston, SC. Mary was Charles' granddaughter, daughter of James Eddings Tennent.

The 1880 Census (below) shows a Laura Fripp b. abt.1820 (cousin). She is thought to be a sister of Paul Archbald Fripp. It also shows a widowed Mary Fripp b. abt. 1807. This is clearly not Charles' mother, so must be Mary Eddings, mother of Mary Julia Fripp.

In a book by Louisa Stoney, titled "A Day On Cooper River" and published in 1932, a plantation named Mount Parnassus (later shortened to Parnassus), near Foster Creek, Goose Creek Parish, South Carolina, was owned by a Dr. Charles Tennent. It had been in his posession for some time before 1842 and remained in his family until 1867.
