The Fripp family of South Carolina

Notes

William Washington Fripp

From "SHFoSC":
William graduated at South Carolina College and served in the Confederate Army. He married Mary Middleton Porteous and left several children. He died intestate.

The book "Letters from Port Royal, 1862-1868" by Elizabeth Ware Pearson, reports that Washington Fripp was shot in 1862 for refusing to enlist. It follows a sentence about William Washington Fripp's parents, but must be referring to another Washington, if he was shot dead. However, the following sentence refers to his brother, Dr. Clarence Fripp.

Dr. Clarence Augustus Fripp

From "SHFoSC":
Dr. Clarence Augustus Fripp served as a Surgeon in the Confederate Army. He never married and died many years ago. (in relation to 1905)

From "Tombee":
Before 1860 Clarence had fathered two children by his slave and housekeeper Rachel.

From Website: http://ourworld.cs.com/mikegriffith1/chamberlain.htm
Ex-slaves of the Sea Islands in South Carolina showed great kindness to their former masters when the latter fell on hard times. The freedmen "did not enjoy seeing their old masters suffer." They "offered help and even, when they could, gave them money" (in Gutman, The Black Family in Slavery and Freedom, p. 312 n). An ex-slave in Georgia remained on his former master's estate to work for wages "so that, in a variety of ways, he could take care of the distressed white family. . . ."

In another case, Clarence Fripp, a former Sea Islands slaveowner, whose plantation had been sold from him, went back to his old plantation and asked his ex-slaves for money because he was nearly destitute. The freedmen took up a collection for him and gave him a "significant amount of money" Two years earlier, "a northerner among the Sea Islanders reported that 'all' the ex-slaves 'speak with great affection of Fripp'"

Clarence is also mentioned in good light in the book "Letters from Port Royal, 1862-1868" by Elizabeth Ware Pearson
In September 1863, it mentions that Dr. Clarence Fripp was in jail for trying to escape (from the Yankees ?). It says that he did not want to leave, but was carried off by his brothers, one of whom, Eddings, had since died.

The following description of Clarence in 1865 is found on page 319 of "Letters from Port Royal".

Dr. Clarence Fripp began to practice medicine on St. Helena, living with John Major, but afterwards got a contract surgeon's berth from General Saxton, and is now in the Village, next door to his old house, now occupied by Miss Towne! He made a professional visit at Coffin's Point and dined with them!

A picture of Clarence Fripp on his return to St. Helena, and a glimpse of his situation from his own point of view, are given in a letter to the New York Nation from Dennett, a special correspondent (see page 380). Dennett writes that, among the Northern soldlers and traders in the hotel at Hilton Head, there was also "a person who had the easily distinguishable appearance and manners of a South Carolinian. This gentleman, & person of some fifty odd years old, dressed tolerably well in a suit of grey clothes, with a large display of crumpled linen at the collar and cuffs of his coat, sat before the stove smoking, and talking very freely about his present poverty and his plans for the future." After explaining that he had left St. Helena when Dupont forced an entrance, leaving his plate and furniture behind, and that his plantation had been sold, Dr. Fripp set forth the situation in which he now found himself. "Some Massachusetts man had bought it, ..... (Page 320 missing)

Another book, "Rehearsal for Reconstruction: The Port Royal Experiment" by Willie Lee Rose, explains that Laura Towne was the present owner of Clarence's old home, and that he met Dennett in the Hotel at Hilton Head. He told him that he "may as well starve in Beaufort than in any strange place." He said that he hoped to get a little medical practise, and eke a living out of fish & oysters. However, with the help of a collection from his freed slaves (see above) he was able to survive through his poverty.

Laura Matilda Towne came from Philadelphia in 1862 to help the uneducated slaves deal with their new found freedom. See HERE.

James E. Lawrence Fripp (See Notes)

Information from the book "Tombee", and other sources, show James' parents as James Fripp & Ann Pope. However, other versions show him and his brother, William Oliver Perry Fripp, were sons of William Eddings Fripp, who was a younger brother of James.

It also appears that J.E.L & W.O.P were not in the household of James & Ann on the 1820 & 1830 census returns, but were possibly living with his brother William, although William is said to have died in 1826.

It does seem odd that James and Ann had two sons named James. They do not appear to be the same person, as both appear to have families at the same time. Perhaps he was born as Laurence, but occasionaly switched his first names around. If so, he is probably the Laurence shown below on the Church Registry for "Members in Full Communion" 1848.

It also seems strange that this James was married to Evelina but it was the younger "brother" James who had a daughter named Evelyn.

James and Evelina are shown on records of Church Registry at the SCDA&H under L65001 on reel 2: (Courtesy of Ed A. Fripp III)

Under Members in Full Communion added October 1848 were:
Laurence Fripp and Evalina Fripp.
Joseph Pope Fripp, son of J.E.L & Evalina Fripp born May 24, 1855.
William Oliver Fripp, died at Jenkins ---

The following births and deaths are recorded at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/Huguenot/2000-07/0962850809

They are all buried in the Sams burying ground on Dathaw Island, South Carolina:

The grave of Joseph Pope Fripp/ infant son of J.E. L. and E.E. Fripp/ Born May 28, 1855/ Died August 7, 1855

These appear to be children of James E. Lawrence and Evelina Eddings Sams, but the birth dates of the first twins are before their parents were born. Perhaps 1812 should read 1842 ? If the 4 was very worn it may have resembled a 1.

The following births and deaths are recorded at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/Huguenot/2000-07/0962850809

They are all buried in the Sams burying ground on Dathaw Island, South Carolina:

James Hann Fripp /infant son of J.E.L. and E.E. Fripp/ who was born January the 31st 1812/ and departed this life July 29th 1813/aged etc.

William Oliver Fripp/ infant son of J.E.L. an E.E. Fripp/ who was born the 31st day of January 1812/ and departed this life on the 17th day of September 1813/ aged etc.

Twin grave: The grave of Lawrence Fripp/ infant son of J.E. L. and E.E. Fripp/ born May 1, 1854/ Died June 22nd 1854

Capt. William Oliver Perry Fripp

Information from the book "Tombee", and other sources, show William's parents as James Fripp & Ann Pope. However, other versions show him and his brother, James E. Lawrence Fripp, were sons of William Eddings Fripp, who was a younger brother of James.

It also appears that J.E.L & W.O.P were not in the household of James & Ann on the 1820 & 1830 census returns, but were possibly living with his brother William, although William is said to have died in 1826.

Records show an "Oliver Perry Fripp" baptized February 3, 1826, the son of William & Martha Eddings Fripp. Some believe this is W.O.P Fripp, but the age appears to be 6 years out, unless the year 1826 was mistranscribed, and should read 1820.

1850 Census: St Helena Parish, South Carolina (Ed-185)
W.O.P. FRIPP, M-30, PLANTER
MARTHA, F-28
MARY, F-6
NOTE: Martha could be a first wife or his sister, who would have been about 26.

William was Captain of 1st (Martin's) South Carolina Mounted Militia Regiment, which he enlisted aged 42 on 4 Nov 1861. He enrolled for a period of 12 months, but his company were mustered out of service after two months by General Lee’s order at Pocotaligo Station, South Carolina, on the 4th day of January, 1862. He later became Provost Marshall of the Confederate States 3rd SC Cavalry at Grahamville, S.C. See HERE

Details of a letter written by W.O.P. Fripp on 26 Feb 1864, sold on eBay 27 Jan 2008
Detailed letter from William O. P. Fripp to James R. Pringle, prominent Charleston Commission Merchant and Financier. Discusses the death of his Brother James T. E. Fripp who “lost his life in the defense of his country” June 2, 1863. He notes that he is the executor of his brother’s estate and that he (James Thomas) leaves a widow and three orphan children.

Although not in the letter, the children became real orphans when Mrs. Fripp died after the War in 1867. The letter discusses the use of monies in Confederate Bonds. After he mentions that James lost his life, he quotes a specific law that provides money to widows and minor children. He ends with a request of Mr. Pringle to let him know if he (Pringle) can handle these matters for him.

This must have been a very hard and sad letter for William to write, as his Brother had been killed June 2, 1863, only a few months before this letter was written (February 26, 1864). I would guess this letter would have been sent while the will was being settled in Probate Court. Letter is excellent condition with only small quarter inch tear in fold at top. On light blue lined paper measuring 12.75 by 7 inches.

The seller of the letter was from James Island. It sold for $162.

Theresa Ann Taylor

TOMBEE has her name as THOMAS Ann Taylor, but this was probably obtained from her marriage entry, which shows her as Ths. (See Below)

Details from SCHSM Vol.70 (Courtesy Ed A. Fripp III - Ed-187)
March 11, 1841, Capt W. O. P. Fripp married Ths Ann Taylor
NOTE: Ed had put (Barnwell) after her name, but had forgotten why. He also recalls seeing her name as Theresa. Perhaps she had previously married a Taylor and Barnwell was her maiden name (or visa versa)

Ann "Evelyn" Evelina Fripp

Evelyn Fripp was adopted by her uncle, William Oliver Perry Fripp, after the death of her parents.

In 1900, she is reported to have shown Rebecca Margaret Linley (grandmother of Edgar Allen Fripp III) the original Land Grant of 1662, left to her by her father, on heavy parchment with the seal of Charles II.

The following note was recorded by William Edward Fripp (1896-1965) and forwarded by his grandson, Paul W. Steadman:
Evelyn Fripp (1858-1901), daughter of James Thomas Edings Fripp (1822-1863) and Elizabeth Amelia Fripp (1826-1867) was their only surviving child. She never marrried. After her parents death, she was raised by her uncle, W.O. P. Fripp. At the time of her death, Evelyn had the original Land Grant made by King Charles II to John Fripp in 1662, granting land in the latitude of St. Helena. The grant was on heavy parchment or vellium with the King's seal. After her death, a Miss Barnwell took possession of her records. Mrs. Cuthbert B. Fripp now living (1963) age 90, said she has seen the Grant, then in the possession of Mr. William Elliott, Esq. (Atlanta). What became of it since Mr. Elliott's death we do not know."

It is thought that Mr. Elliott was an attorney & art collector from Atlanta, GA., who bought the grant in the 1950's. William Edward Fripp's notes stated that he tried to reacquire the land grant in the early 1960's, but the gentlemen in Atlanta did not wish to sell it.
