NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle. This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.
I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.
If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.
Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.
If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

1908 ..... Gosport, Hants. (Death)Eliza was a housekeeper for William Owen Hibdige in 1901. It seems that she had two children, Fred (known as Jim) & Dorothy, by William Owen (or possibly his son William). The children lived with her at Bridgemary, Gosport, until her death in 1908. The children then went to live with William Owen Hibdige.
Dorothy was told that her mother had red hair and died shortly after her birth.
Jim was born with the surname Malley, but later changed his name to Hibdige by deed poll. They always believed they were half-siblings, and it was only a few weeks after Dorothy's death that the truth was discovered.
Eliza is mentioned on a postcard sent from her step-son, William, to his sister, Violet, dated 28 Aug 1906. He says that "Mrs Malley is sick".

ABODES:
1904 ..... 3 Ashby Place, High Street, Gosport. Hampshire (birth)
1940's ... Totland Road, Cosham, Hampshire. (With father)Jim worked at Midland Cattle Products, in Portchester, and worked for the Fire Service in early 1940's. He often used to sleep walk, and was a bit of a loner. He never married and is said to have lived with his father until he died in 1941, possibly in Paulsgrove. After his father died, he was looked after by his grand nephew, Robert Hibdige & wife, Doris.
Jim informed his sister, Dorothy, of their father's death when she was living at Northney, Hayling Island. They had always assumed they were step brother & sister, and never knew they had the same mother. Jim was born with the surname, Malley, but changed his name by deed poll to James Frederick Hibdige about 1970.
Their mother, Eliza, was a housekeeper for William Owen Hibdige in 1901. The children lived with her at Bridgemary, Gosport, until her death in 1908. They then went to live with their father.

Edward's brief Navy service describes him as follows:
Name: Edward Bridgen
Service No: 114529
Birth: 6 Jun 1862 (added 2 years on his age)
Birth place: Portsmouth, Hants.
Height: 5ft 4in

Ships served in: Excellent

Rating: D.S.C.
Service: 8 Sep 1880 to 8 Sep 1880
Character: Fair
Discharge: £17/10 7 for 42 day prh? & D as objectionable ?
Remarks: F.E. D to Maidstone gaol 11.9.80It would appear that Edward served only one day in the Royal Navy, and was discharged to Maidstone gaol 3 days later. He must have been keen to enlist, as he gave his age as 18, although he was only 16. His father was a prison warden in Portsmouth, so was he sent to Maidstone to work there? - unlikely! The reference to £17/10 and the 42 days has yet to be discovered.
In 1891, he is found in Portsmouth as a painter, then 2 years later, he is in the fire service, and then possibly in the army in 1901, as a soldier in Woolwich, Kent.
He is quite difficult to track down, as he constantly swapped his first names around, and even added the name Richard on one of his son's marriage certificates, where he is described as a Master Tailor in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary service.

Emily Frances COLWELL, Servt, U, 13, Purbrook, Hampshire, General Domestic ServtNOTE: The servant, Emily Frances Colwell, was my great grandmother. Her parents are 8 entries previous in the 1881 census.
Emily married Edward James Thomas Bridgen in 1891. His father, Edward Bridgen, was a warder in the prison between 1864 & 1871 (possibly much longer). It would appear that Emily met Edward via her master, John Astridge, the governor of the prison. Edward senior's brother, George Bridgen, was also a dispenser of medicine at the prison.
Another of Edward senior's brothers was Charles Bridgen a dentist (possibly at the prison). Two of Charles' daughters, Caroline & Elizabeth, married the brothers, Thomas Ernest Boyd Broadbent & Frederick Holdsworth Broadbent, whose younger brother was Edward Gerald Broadbent, husband of Harriett Kate Astridge.
Their sister, Mary Theresa Broadbent, married Francis Jerome Palmes in 1881, who was 14th great grandson of King Edward III of England.
