NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

Mark Clayton

In 1851, Mark is shown as a proprietor of Houses. He probably inherited or purchased these after 1841. They appear to be the buildings in Birks Hall Lane in 1851, named as "M. Clayton Buildings". Several relatives appear to be living in them. They follow "Taylors Building" at enumeration no. 17, and continue from enum. 18 - 27, followed by "Sharps Building". So Mark owned at least 10 buildings.

At least three were occupied by relatives.
19: Thomas Hood (35) Forge Man, of Staffordshire, with family. (Possible relative of Mark junior's wife, below)

22: Richard Clayton and family (Mark's son) They also have a lodger, Enock Shurr (Spurr?), possibly related to Mark's wife, Mary Spurr.

26: Mary Elizabeth Clayton (nee Hood) and children. This appears to be the family of Mark junior, although she is shown as widow. She is quite a mystery at present (see her notes)

Summary of Will of Mark Clayton, Yeoman of Guiseley, Yorkshire
To granddaughter, Mary Ellen Clayton, only daughter of late son Hiram:
All my shares in the Yeadon & Guiseley Gas Works.

The rest of his hereditaments and estate appear to be left to son, Richard Clayton; nephew Jeremiah Clayton "son of my brother John", and to daughter Mary Grimshaw, then to her husband, John, and then to children.

Executors are son, Richard; & nephew, Jeremiah.
Signed: Mark Clayton - 22 Jan 1855
Proved: 4 Mar 1856 (Value of estate under £200)

The will is three large pages, and a little confusing, but no other persons are mentioned. His wife must have died earlier, but his son, Mark, is thought to have been living. A full transcript will be added later.

Original note for Mark: (unknown source)
Thought to be born 18 Jun 1874, son of Thomas Clayton. (should this be 1784?)

George was born about 1813 at Yeadon. It is not known if they were related. His parents could be a William & Isabella.

Marriage certificate details:
William Grimshaw, aged 25, of Rawdon, Guiseley, Yorks., a Merchant and bachelor, married Margaret Hardy, aged 19, of same parish at St Martin's, Coney Street York, Yorkshire, on 17 November 1825.
WITNESSES: John Hardy, Thomas Hardy, Jemima Hark & Eliza Hardy

Children of William and Margaret:
John GRIMSHAW - Christening: 3 Jul 1827 Rawdon, Yorkshire
Robert GRIMSHAW - Christening: 4 Jan 1829 Rawdon, Yorkshire
William Thomas GRIMSHAW - Christening: 13 Nov 1831 Rawdon, Yorkshire

It was thought that William may have been descended from Thomas Grimshaw & Ellen Forster, who married 25 Nov 1784 in Winwick, Lancashire, but this now seems unlikely. William has a grandson named Tom Forster Grimshaw, whose siblings all have their ancestors surnames as a middle name. All of these have been accounted for except FORSTER.

NOTE: Another William & Margaret had the following children. This family can be found on the 1851 cenus at South Milford, where William is a railway labourer born abt. 1821
George GRIMSHAW - Christening: 22 Dec 1844 Sherburn In Elmet, Yorkshire, England
Sarah Ann GRIMSHAW - Christening: 18 Mar 1857 Sherburn In Elmet, Yorkshire, England
Birth Date: 10 Jul 1847
Christening Date: 18 Mar 1857, South Milford, Yorkshire

It is possible that William was related to William Grimshaw (1708 - 1763), the Methodist preacher and incumbent of Haworth. The latter William has had several books written about his life, one of which was written by this William's brother-in-law, Robert Spence Hardy. However, Robert does not mention any relationship in his book. A brief biography follows:

From website: http://rylibweb.man.ac.uk/data1/dg/methodist/bio/biog.html
William Grimshaw (1708-63) was born in Brindle, Lancashire, the son of a poor farmer. He was educated at Blackburn Grammar School and Heskin Free School before going up to Cambridge Christ's Church in 1726. After his graduation, he was ordained and served curacies at Littleborough and Todmorden until 1742, when he was admitted to the perpetual curacy of Haworth in Yorkshire.
Grimshaw began to exercise an evangelical ministry on Methodist lines although he did not have contact with the Wesleys until much later. He was particularly influenced by the Scottish preacher William Darney who visited Haworth in 1744. Grimshaw met Charles Wesley in October 1746 and the following May, John Wesley preached in Haworth Church. Grimshaw began to preach outside his parish bounds and in July 1747 accompanied John Bennet on a tour of Methodist societies in Lancashire and Cheshire. In 1750 Grimshaw was named by John Wesley as the next in authority after the Wesley brothers.
A staunch churchman, Grimshaw and Charles Wesley were close allies in the struggle to keep Methodism within the Church of England. This did not however prevent him from building a Methodist chapel in Haworth in 1758.

NOTE: Robert's middle name looks like HARDY, but all other records for this person say it is HARRY. If it is Hardy, there could be a connection to William's mother, Margaret Hardy.

If the above is the correct William Thomas, he appears to have been entered twice. Perhaps he was visiting his brother, John, (below) and his apprentice master entered him at the address above.

Maria Clark

In 1841, Maria was a teenage servant girl living on Burgate Farm, in Burgate, Hampshire. Her future husband, William Roberts, was a labourer on a neighbouring farm. She married him 4 years later on Christmas Day 1845, at Fisherton Anger, Wiltshire.

It appears that, after William's death, in 1867, she moved back with the family of Thomas Kent, where she lived in 1841. In 1871 she is shown as a nurse, probably to Thomas Kent's new baby, Walter. In 1881 she has moved to Clapham, London, and is living in the same road as Walter Kent and his sisters.

It seems likely that Thomas Kent died between 1871-81, and his wife, Emma, moved to London with her children and Maria.

Emily (Rose) Charlesworth

Emily had two children by her first marriage, Fred & Florence. Fred died aged 2, and Florence was raised by her second husband, Harry Clayton Grimshaw.

Harry probably left England between 1882 - 1891 to work on the railways in India. He probably took Emily and their 4 children, or they may have left shortly after him. None of the family are found on census returns after 1881, except sons Harry & John, who probably came back between 1891 - 1901 to study engineering at a university in Leeds, Yorkshire.

Florence Grimshaw (nee Thornton)

Probable Birth: Jun 1872 - Thornton Florence Huddersfield 9a 389

NOTE: It seems most likely that Florence was a daughter of Emily and her first husband, William Robert Thornton. She is shown on the 1881 census at the bottom of the household.

Florence's father probably left England between 1882 - 1891 to work on the railways in India. He probably took Emily and the 4 children, or they may have left shortly after him. None of the family are found on census returns after 1881, except sons Harry & John, who probably came back between 1891 - 1901 to study engineering at a university in Leeds, Yorkshire.

ABODES:
1873 ..... Huddersfield, Yorks. - (Birth)
1881 ..... 4 Whitestone Rd, Grove Building, Huddersfield, Yorks. - (Census)
After 1881 - Probably India.

Possible Marriage: Sep 1897
Brown William Leeds 9b 711
GRIMSHAW Florence Leeds 9b 711
GROVER Madeline Jane Leeds 9b 711
Smith Henry Leeds 9b 711
NOTE: Madeline married Henry SMITH, so Florence must have married William BROWN. The 1901 Census shows a William & Florence Brown (both aged 29 and born Leeds) living in Headingly-cum-Burley. This is where Florence's brothers were both lodging in 1901. However, also living with Wiliam & Florence is Lavinia Sugden, Sister-in-law, Unmarried, aged 35. This suggests that Florence's maiden name was SUGDEN.
