NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle. This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.
I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.
If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.
Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.
If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

Found at: http://www.leamingtonspatoday.co.uk/mk4custompages/custompage.aspx?pageid=41228What will be done about flickering light?Sir, - can anyone say whether there is any town in England which can boast of electric light so bad and so expensive as Leamington’s.
The light constantly flickers and wholly or partially goes out; on Sundays and similar holidays one can hardly see across a small room by it; and under “normal conditions” it appears to produce about one half of the candle power marked upon our bulbs.
I am credibly informed that in Birmingham if the light even flickers once a special meeting of the Committee is held immediately to enquire into the cause, and large numbers of persons write to complain. Under similar conditions here one or two special postmen would have to be put on to deal with the Electrical Co.’s correspondence. What is going to be done about it for 1928?

An article about Thomas by his niece, Lavinia Coates
My grandfather's first born was Thomas - "The Inheritor" who was the son on whom he focussed all his hopes. Unfortunately, the leather trade, which Grandpa had built up, had no interest whatsoever for Thomas Coates junior. When he left school he was found hidden in corners or under the stairs of the premises immersed in reading tomes of books. My father, his youngest brother, remembers that he resembled Bernard Shaw in character.
Although I had heard that he was accused of embezzling money, and he was sent away from home by his father in disgust, his daughter told me of his later reform. He was converted to Christianity by becoming a Pentecostal. Thomas Coates senior was a strict Calvinist.
After his failure in the leather factory he went to live in London, but again he failed to establish himself financially in a retail leather firm on his own. I understand he appealed to his home several times for financial help. So during his sojourn in London, he had disinherited himself and as a result became a financial disaster in the family.
He married an Irish woman, whose character has remained obscure. When he met her she was thought to have worked in a domestic situation. She suffered from Tuberculosis, from which she finally died quite young. They had three children, one girl and two boys.
One day, there was an urgent call from the police at my grandparent's home in Tonbridge, there being no telephone service. The policeman urged them to go to a house in London, where Thomas and his family were living. My grandparents found a very miserable state of affairs. My uncle was dying of Pneumonia and the children were in a state of starvation and neglect. My grandparents had children of their own living at home and so were only prepared to take the daughter, Mabel, aged five years old. Arrangements were made for the two boys to be cared for in a home.
NOTE: The 1901 census (below) shows Thomas living in London with his wife, Catherine. She was born in London, but Irish connection has been found.

Details from death certificate (courtesy of Michael Everest)
Thomas died of Pneumonia in St Giles Workhouse, Bloomsbury, on 14 Apr 1906. His address was given as 1 Macklin St, and his occupation as Commercial Traveller. The "Informant" was the Workhouse Master.NOTE: The middle name, Everest, was not given, but everything else fits. If he was in poor condition when submitted to the workhouse, he probably never gave his full name.
Notes from Lavinia Coates (niece of Catherine's husband) suggest that Catherine was an Irish woman, who worked in a domestic situation. She suffered from Tuberculosis, from which she finally died quite young. However, neither of her parents appear to have been born in Ireland.
NOTE:
Thomas' wife was previously recorded here as Margaret Upjohn, but she is now known to be the wife of another Thomas Coates.

Notes from great grandson, Howard Boulton:
During their retirement, Orpa and Francis shared a house in Frien Barnet, with their daughter, Edith, and her husband.Howard recalls that; Francis would oil and sharpen his wood working tools quite regularly even in retirement; and Orpah loved to play billiards and would challenge all-comers to a game on a table that converted to a dining table (wobetide you if she did not win). They also gave he and his sister a 2/6 penny piece (half a crown) each. An absolute fortune then, in pocket money, when they visited them.

Ernest was aboard the ship "Alert" in 1881, which left England 2 years earlier.
He joined HMS Victory 1 June 1894, and again in November 1895 with promotion to Master at Arms. There are no details of him leaving the ship in this period, but he probably left for a while when he married Emily between July - September 1894.
He left the navy in 1919, still at the rank of Master at Arms.

The "Alert" was engaged on a "scientific voyage of discovery" around the world from 1879 to 1882, so Ernest would have been on this trip. Photos and further details of the nine ships named "Alert" can be found at:http://fwaterfield.tripod.com/hmsalert/alert.htmlA painting of Ernest's ship, said to have been done by one of the other officers, was in the posession of Ernest's niece, Lavinia. It is thought to have been either the Alert or Centurion but seems to be a combination of the two or possibly another ship. The painting has a very ornate frame which Lavinia recalled had come from Polynesia. Click the thumbnail below to enlarge, maybe you can identify the ship. A photograph of the crew including Ernest and also Captain (later Admiral) Jellicoe, is in the possession of the Coates family.
