NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

My Family Tree

Notes

Nelson Victor Coates

Nelson was always known as Vic, as his nephew Tony Gammage recalls. He knew him well, especially during the war, when they both lived in Tonbridge. Vic was a good cricketer and frequently watched by his nephew.

Vic ran the family Tannery business in Tonbridge with his uncles Percy & Jabez. The business, started by his Grandfather Thomas, was still in existence in Tonbridge in the late 1950's. His cousin, Ross Vicars, believes the closure of the business was enforced by their reluctance to move away from the manufacture of their traditional wares - slippers, mittens, gloves, leggings, waistcoats, jerkins etc. - when they should really have been moving towards fine leather goods.

Ross has sent the following News Article about the business. Click Here

Notes from Ian Miller: (Ian found Nelson's medals in a Welsh antique shop, March 2006)
Nelson also served with the Special Constabulary from about 1939 to at least 1966, receiving the Defence Medal for service in WW2, Coronation Medal 1953 and Special Constabulary Long Service medal with 3 bars for Long service 1947, 1956 and 1966. The last is named Sergt Nelson V Coates. He was an Inspector in the Kent Special Constabulary when he received the 1953 Coronation medal, so was serving in his home county.

The medals were sold to a collector in Brazil, who has kindly supplied scans and further details of the medals. Click Here

Francis Frederick L. Ashton

Frank's parents were probably Francis Ashton & Julia Ellen L. Macdonald, whose marriage was registered at Isliington in the March qtr 1886. Francis (senior) was a shopkeeper in 1901 selling Mineral Water, Spirits, Tobacco & Confectionary. He was born abt 1858 at Hoxton, London, son of Francis Ashton, a Tea Dealer employing 3 men, born abt 1822 at St. Lukes, London, and his wife, Sarah.

It is possible that this line is related to Edwin Henry Ashton, who married Edith Coates, the older sister of Orpah Coates (Frank's mother-in-law). Edwin's line also sold provisions in London, but any connection would have to be a few generations earlier. Edwin's father, Henry, was born abt 1825 at Waltham Abbey, Essex.

Note from Ross, December 2002:
Mum now recalls that Gerry (Grace) was related to the Norman side of the family - not the Moon. She is still sure that Gerry's mother was called Adelaide and thinks she married one of Sarah Jane's brothers. I know that Sarah Janes parents were William and Eliza (he was a tenant farmer in Waldron near Uckfield) but that is all I have - I know of no brothers or sisters but have not really researched that line of the family.
