NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

Rev. Aaron Foster

Notes from Elizabeth Kohlhoff
Frances, daughter of Rev. Aaron Foster & Ann born 13 Apr 1761, received at church 5 May. Aaron & Ann also had Edward 1758, Thomas 1760, Aaron 1764, Robert 1766, Andrew 1767, and Margaret Ann 1769.
Elizabeth believes this Aaron is Aaron Foster, A.M. Vicar Choral of Wells cathedral, died May 1790 And Ann Foster wife of Aaron died Dec 1782.

Extract from a letter sent by Somerset Record Office to Evelyn Pickess dated 4 March 1987 (courtesy Elizabeth Kohlkoff):

We hold a probate copy of the will of the Rev. Aaron Foster of the out parish of St. Cuthbert's Wells, clerk, dated 24 November 1789, proved 17 July 1790, with associated probate papers (ref. 20/FS box 69) He mentions his children Mary Ann, Esther, Frances wife of William Wensley (to whom he left £300), Edward, Thomas, Aaron, Robert & Andrew. Apart from monetry bequests he refers to his farm at Rowlstone in Banwell and the rectory of Barton St David, and his estate was sworn under £2,000. Among the probate papers is a release of Frances's legacy signed by herself and her husband, William Wensley of Bristol, Linendraper. Details of the family appear in A.J. Jewers, Wells Cathedral, its Monumental Inscriptions and Heraldry (Published by Mitchell & Hughes, 1892). Frances was baptized at the cathedral on 13 April 1761 daughter of the Rev. Aaron Foster by his wife Ann nee Slade, married at the cathedral on 1 January 1752. The Rev. Francis Drake Foster, to whom you refer, was born on 17 December 1794 son of the Rev. Edward Foster (1757-1826), Aaron's eldest son, F.D.F. was thus Frances Wensley's nephew. The Rev. Aaron Foster was baptized at Long Sutton in 1725 son of the Rev. Moses Foster (Vicar there 1738-53) and his wife Ann, and Moses was baptized at Aller on 18 April 1690 son of William and Alice Foster. William was baptized at Aller on 4 October 1646 son of William and Joan Foster, and the latter William was baptized there on 4 February 1614 son of William Foster and Mary Gamlin, married there 29 June 1610. The family do not appear in Aller before that date and it is tempting to link them with the Rev. Walter Foster, a well-known mathematician (rector of Aller 1633-c.1667 and his brother Samuel, both in the Dictionary of National Biography and apparently from Northamptonshire.
