NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

John Trude Fripp

John moved to Broughton, Hampshire, some time after 1900, where he owned "Jasmine Cottage", now known as "Brigg House"

The Times - 8 Dec 1933
WILLS AND BEQUESTS - Gifts to Charity
Mr. JOHN TRUDE FRIPP, of Broughton, Hants, who died on October 13, 1932, left estate of the gross value of £14,878, with- net personalty £6,730. He left, after a number of specific bequests, the residue of the property to Esther Amelia Coy, and expressed a wish (but created no trust) that she will devise Broughton House and premises held therewith for the benefit of the inhabitants of Broughton, at her death, to be called the Fripp Trust.

John built a well house, in honour of his son, Lt. John Trude Fripp, who was killed in the 1st World War, at Loos, France in October 1915, just 3 months after arriving in France. The well house was built during the drought of 1921 for the village of Broughton, Hampshire. It was formally handed over to the Parish Council, on behalf of the donor, by Sir Alfred Downing Fripp KCVO etc. and the tablet unveiled by Lady Fripp October 1926.
See Website
At present, there are no records of any connection between these two branches of the Fripp families. However, a news article describing the opening ceremony, refers to Sir Alfred as a cousin of John Trude Fripp, and in Sir Alfred's speech he refers to John as "my trusted and dearly beloved old relative, who I am sure you have all learned to love down here as much as we have in London".

A descendant of Sir Alfred has explained that these references were merely a private joke between the two Fripps.

IGI incorrectly shows birth as Witchampton, Dorset.

NOTES:
It had been suggested that Lilian was possibly the wife of Stanley Keevil Turner and the mother of Harold Tracey Keevil Turner, b. 29 Nov 1898. Stanley lived at the same address as Lilian and her family in 1901. The address was possibly a flat, see below. However, further research shows that Stanley married Lilian Gertrude Quarrell. Lillie Emery Fripp never married.

Robert Fripp

Robert's father is shown as Francis (Gentleman) on his marriage certificate in 1851, but Francis is also shown as a Labourer of Witchampton in Sep 1850, on his wife's burial records. He is later shown as a baker at Romsey on the 1851 Census, born about 1775 Farham, Dorset (possibly Farnham near Tollard Royal, where he married Griselda). The same page shows his daughter Hannah and James Spearing, although the actual page has not yet been checked, only the index.

Samuel Fripp

Info from "Fripp & Fripperie", by Val Peacock & Dawn Evans:
Samuel emigrated to Melbourne, Australia, on the 23rd September 1874, on the steamship "Northumberland", leaving from Plymouth. The voyage was to last 52 days and cost £57.15s. Documents of his voyage are owned by the family, along with a letter to his sister Ruth giving details of the voyage.

Samuel stayed for a while with his uncle John Trude at Point Henry, Geelong, before moving to Melbourne in 1875 where he started work as a bookkeeper. He later became managing director of Roche Tomsitt & Co., wholesale druggists of Flinders Street, Melbourne. His eldest son, Samuel, became their MD in 1936.

In 1918, Samuel bought "Villa Alba", a historic mansion at Studley Park, Kew, which is now owned by St. George's hospital, and renowned for it's late Victorian hand painted decor. The family lived here until 1950, when it was acquired by the Women's Hospital, and later by the Mount Royal Hospital.

Samuel is mentioned on the Alba Villa website: www.villaalbamuseum.org

Samuel Trude Fripp

After the 1st world war, Samuel spent a brief period in Sydney, Australia, where he married Beatrice Edmonds in 1920. He later returned to UK.

The following information is from: http://www.a2a.pro.gov.uk

FILE - PP/MCR/5; Ts. personal experience account entitled "From Jigsaw to Philosophy", by S.T. ("Peter") Fripp. pp. 37-84, 149-158 only. - ref. STF/1 - date: ca. 1965
Shortly after the outbreak of war in 1914 Fripp, a qualified dental surgeon working in his father's London practice, joined the University of London OTC, from whence he was transferred to the London Territorial Field Artillery Brigade, where his fellow subalterns included the author Dennis Wheatley. He was drafted to France in 1916 and served with the 280th Brigade in command of the X 56th Trench Mortar Battery, during the Battle of the Somme. He is very critical of the heavy losses which the British incurred on the Somme, and of the premature use of tanks in the battle, while the fighting also enabled him to formulate his views on war itself (pp. 43-4). Before he was invalided home in early 1917 suffering from gastritis and dysentery, he had a brief meeting with the Prince of Wales, who greatly impressed him (pp. 47-8).
After his convalescence, Fripp secured a transfer to the RFC and qualified as a compass and navigation officer at the Admiralty Compass Observatory at Slough. By his own admission, he then led a very pleasant existence in the United Kingdom until March 1918, when he was ordered to the United States to join the British War Mission under Brigadier-General C F Lee. On his passage across the Atlantic, Fripp was accompanied by Captain (later Sir) Frederick Tymms, and he records their first impressions of America and the warmth of their welcome. Fripp was initially delegated to train American flying officers in air navigation and compass swinging at Camp Dick, Dallas, Texas, and then, after recovering from a bout of Spanish influenza, he joined the British "flying circus", based at Indianapolis, which was helping to raise money for the American "Liberty Loan". For the most part, the "circus" was a very agreeable form of war work, but one or two of the pilots were tragically killed in aircraft accidents. Fripp, who returned to England just before the Armistice, was mentioned in despatches for his work in the United States.
When the Second War broke out Fripp was still working as a dentist in London and spending his weekends at the family home in Chinnor in the Chilterns. He served for a short time in the Chinnor Home Guard, but was then released on account of his age and enlisted, instead, in the Fire Watching Group at Westminster Abbey. He treats the Second World War in a rather spiritual way, as if it was just a minor inconvenience, and does not say much of interest about it.
