NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

John Hardy

John is recorded as a Toy Maker / Dealer, and Jeweller of Preston, Lancashire; 6 Coney Street, York, and later of Fulford Ambo, Yorkshire, where he died in 1849. He may have made "toys" but his products still appear in auctions today. They are usually skillfully crafted from mahogany and inlaid with silver & ivory. These items include spinning wheels, clocks & jewellery cases.

When the choir at York minster was destroyed by fire, in February 1829, John made a number of items from a fragment of the antique tabernacle. One casket is inscribed:

"Jonathan Martin a fanatic, By his own confession set fire to York Minster on 2nd February 1929 when the choir of that most august of temples was destroyed. This with a variety of other articles is made from a fragment saved from the wreck of the magnificent antique tabernacle. Work by John Hardy, Coney Street, York.

Tried at York Castle March 31st 1829 and pronounced insane"

A similar casket is displayed in the Merchant Guildhall at York, with the above details.

It is not yet known when or why he first moved to Preston Lancashire. His children were baptised there from 1803 to 1821, although his first son, Robert Spence, was also baptised / entered into the church at Horsforth in 1806. His first daughter, Margaret, was buried at Horsforth in December 1837, 12 years after her marriage to William Grimshaw. His last three daughters all died in their teens, and were buried at Horsforth in 1835 & 1836. John was buried elsewhere, with his wife, Ann, and daughter, Eliza, as described (below) in his will, although the location is presently unknown. Eliza may have married before she died.

John is mentioned in the first chapter of the memoirs of Gathorne Hardy, 1st Earl of Cranbrook, written by his son, Alfred, and published in 1903. In this chapter, Alfred includes some genealogical corrections to previously published notes about the Hardy family.

In a letter written by Alfred's father, dated January 12, 1904, he corrects errors in an inaccurate account of the Hardy family contained in the Reminiscences of a Mrs. Pickering published in 1903. After dismissing some gossip, which annoyed the family at that time, he mentions some Hardys who had a toy-shop at York, (John & his son Charles) whom he always respected as of kin. Alfred continues ... "From them came Robert Hardy, a Wesleyan Missionary of eminence in Ceylon, whom I saw and conversed with. He wrote on Buddhism."

It is not clear if it was Alfred or Gathorne who conversed with Robert (1803-1868), Alfred would have been 23 when Robert died, but it is good to know that John's family were recognised by our aristocratic cousins.

Assuming this tree is correct, John would have been a 1st cousin 1x removed to Gathorne. John's father, James, is said to be brother of John Hardy (1745-1806), Gathorne's grandfather.
