There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle. This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.
I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.
If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.
Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

Baptism shows father as John, labourer.
An old hand written HARDY tree was obtained by Bob Muncaster (descendant of James Hardy c.1781). This tree shows William married 1st to Elizabeth Penrose (widow 1699-1744) and 2nd to Mary Waddington (1717-1795).
The LDS (official extracts) show William married to Mary Waddington in 1742, which seems to rule out the first marriage. His first child, Elizabeth, was christened July 1743 (just over 9 months after the marriage to Mary.
William is said to be the first Hardy to be a clerk to the Stanhope family, although his brother, John, is also thought to be the attorney of Horsforth between 1750-1777.

This is thought to be James the clothier, whose first son, Henry, was born in Horsforth 1806. Henry's daughter, Margaret, married John Shires. Their descendant, Betty Conn (nee Shires) contacted local historian, Alistair Lawrence, in 1982, after he published an article in a newspaper titled "Story of an old Horsforth family". Betty was then living in Alberta, Canada. The correspondance between her and Alistair has helped to confirm parts of the Hardy family of Horsforth.

John was said to be a Labourer, living at Horsforth in 1670, but this information was probably from the Memoirs of Gathorne Hardy, published 1910. This information may have become distorted over the previous 240 years, and it was more likely that this John was BORN in 1670, and it was his father who was the labourer. However, this has yet to be confirmed. See his father's notes for further details.

John was a solicitor in Bradford, and became a major owner of the Low Moor Iron Company at North Bierley, Yorkshire in 1789.
NOTE: Another John Hardy of Horsforth was an attorney in 1750. He seems likely to be his uncle, born 1706.
The Low Moor Iron Company was formed in 1789 at North Bierley, near Bowling, Yorkshire, on the Rookes Hall, previously owned by Edward Leedes. After Edward's bankruptcy and suicide, the estate was purchased for £33,200 by Rev. Joseph Dawson, Richard Hird & John Hardy, plus a few smaller partners who soon sold out.
John Hardy was a Bradford solicitor, who served as estate steward to Walter Spencer Stanhope. Here he developed his skills in entrepreneurial speculation, which he later used to form his own dynasty.
Dawson & Hardy's mineralogical and management skills increased the company's annual capital from £52,000 in 1793 to £250,000 in 1818. The company remained in the Dawson & Hardy families throughout the 19th century, and also the Hird's (by inheritance) and the Wicham's, who married into the Hird family.

Mary, third daughter of Thomas Cockshott, of Bingley
Son of John, Attorney at Law
A description of Charles is found in Chapter 1 of "The Memoirs of Gathorne Hardy" by his son Alfred, published in 1910. He writes... my grandfather John was born at Horsforth on the 11th of October 1773. His mother died on the 10th of December 1774, and from a second marriage with Mary, third daughter of Thomas Cockshott, of Bingley, a second son Charles was born in 1780. My father remembered this uncle, who died a comparatively young man at Sidmouth in 1831.
In 1893 he writes : ' I have a vivid recollection of him with his powdered head which gave him age in our eyes : he lived at Thorpe Arch where I recall him, but more when he came to see us at Woodhouse near there, now in Leeds. He was popular with us children and promoted our sports, a little mischievously at times, unless my memory misleads me.'
Son of William, Lawyer's Clerk
Notes by local historian, Alistair Lawrence, found in Horsforth museum, say this William was a butcher on Chapel Green, and was also said to have become a clerk to the Stanhope family at some time. His son, William jr., was also said to have been a butcher and probable ancestor of the present day Hardy family of Town Street and New Road Side.

Possibly John Hardy, victualler of The Kings Arms, Horsforth in 1822 (Baines Directory)
According to family tradition, written 1910 in Chapter 1 of "The Memoirs of Gathorne Hardy" by his son Alfred, the Hardy family originally came from Ireland. The first of note being a John Hardy, described as a labourer living at Horsforth, Yorkshire in 1670.
NOTE: The family history may have become distorted over the previous 240 years, and it is likely that John was "BORN" in 1670, and it was his father who was a labourer. (To be confirmed)
The author continues ... From his son William, born in 1715, came another John Hardy, born in 1745, from whose marriage with Annis, only daughter of William Atkinson of Bradford, which took place on the 19th of November 1770.
The author's grandfather, John, was born at Horsforth on the 11th of October 1773. John's mother died on the 10th of December 1774, and from a second marriage with Mary, third daughter of Thomas Cockshott, of Bingley, a second son Charles was born in 1780. The author's father remembered this uncle, who died a comparatively young man at Sidmouth in 1831.
A short history of the Hardy family is found in the museum at Horsforth, written in the 1980's by local historian Alistair Lawrence. He says that the first to arrive was Thomas Hardy, who helped John Stanhope II escape from Ireland during the Irish rebellion, about 1650. John, a wealthy land agent, rewarded Thomas with work on his estate, until he died in 1683. This information was found in the notes of Dr. H. Bailey, whose details are presently unknown.
The connection between the Hardy & Stanhope familes continued for several generations.
