NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

Florence (Nelly?) Baxter

Florence was thought to be known as Nelly (according to her niece, Sheila Hart). However, a photo of her sister Alice and her husband, Harry Clayton Grimshaw, shows her with a Flo and Nelly, so perhaps Nelly was the nickname of another sister. It is also possible that "Flo", in the photo, was Harry's sister, Florence, so perhaps Florence Baxter was known as Nelly to avoid confusion.

Further notes from Richard B. Walker.
The Hardshaw West Monthly Meeting books show that Hannah and daughter Sarah moved to Pontefract MM in the second half of 1854 and then on 29 Dec 1859 Hannah, by herself, moved to the North District of Somerset.

Explanation
From the earliest days (1680’s) if a Quaker wanted to move for a period of time to another district, this could be weeks or years, they took with them a note of Introduction written and signed by their Monthly Meeting. This would be presented as a welcome to the new MM and gave legitimacy and help to the new visitor. Both Monthly Meetings would keep a written record of those who they received or recommended. A person's return would also be noted.

Jeremiah Grimshaw

Details from: http://www.guise.plus.com/Rawdon/grimshaws.htm (hosted by Joanna Guise)

Jeremiah was 3x great grandfather of the Leeds artist John Atkinson Grimshaw, whose paintings are exhibited in the finest art galleries around the world.

Jeremiah was one of a deputation which presented a "Humble Address" to George I from the Yearly Meeting held in London 26th May 1716. A Letter from Henry Gouldney to Sir John Rodes, 31st May 1716 relates " … honest Jeramiah Grimshaw was particulery showed to the King, and gave him a reverend bow, which the king was pleased to returne againe."

Abraham Grimshaw

It is possible that there was another generation between this Abraham and Edward.

The website at http://www.guise.plus.com/Rawdon/grimshaws.htm shows that Sarah Grimshaw of Ivy House made an application, in 1672, for her home to be used as a regular Meeting Place for Quakers. It states that the first owner of Ivy House was Abraham Grimshaw I (1603-1670), who was her Father-in-law, and not her husband as shown in this tree. He was a small farmer and clothier, who was discontented with the State Church, thus forming the catalyst for the Grimshaw Quakers.
The 20 year age gap between Abraham & Sarah also appears to indicate that her husband could have been the son of another Abraham, who was a son of Edward.

The LDS website shows an Abrahamus Grimeshaw christened at Saint Peter, Sheffield, Yorkshire on 10 Feb 1633, son of Abrahami, who could be a possible candidate. This conflict is being looked into.

Some of Abraham's descendants married into the Hustler family of Yeadon. John Hustler became the ‘father’ of the Bradford wool trade.

Sarah Collier

The website at http://www.guise.plus.com/Rawdon/earlydays.htm shows that Sarah was a daughter of Josiah Collier, whose brother was a preacher from Bradford.

It shows that, Sarah Grimshaw of Ivy House made an application, in 1672, for her home to be used as a regular Meeting Place for Quakers. It also states that the first owner of Ivy House was Abraham Grimshaw, who was her Father-in-law, and not her husband as shown in this tree. This conflict is being looked into.

Sarah was buried in 1695 on a piece of land at Esholt Springs, Dib Lane, Guiseley, known as Quaker Wood. The land had been released to the Dissenters of the State Church as Dibhouse Burial Ground, and is now part of William Matchell’s Timber Yard. A photo of the commemorative stone can be found at the first link below, along with maps and a recent photo of Ivy House.
