NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

Harty (Harriett?) was living with her uncle Philip in 1881 (see below)

A letter from her grandparents to Elizabeth "Etta" Dunne, sent March 1884, mentions Elizabeth's cousin "Harty", who was then 7 yrs old. The letter says that Harty's mother had died 5 years before, and that Harty's mother was a sister of Elizabeth's mother, Emma. It also mentions that Harty was taken in by her Uncle & Aunt, and that she had an older brother & sister.

She must be the young girl in the photo outside "Drove Lodge". Philip Colwell describes her to Elizabeth "Etta" Dunne as "your cousin wich I took when her Mother died, and brought up. She is a strong woman now, in service and in a good place." This letter was written in Dec 1899, but the photo was taken before Philip's first wife died (1891).

Patrick Andrew Dunne

Info from Shirley Spears Parker:
Patrick was stationed in Alahabad, India at about the time the two children were born.

In 1879, he was stationed in Bermuda. On 10 November 1879 he was given permission to send daughter, Elizabeth Harriet, and son, Wm. Charles, to St. Joseph’s orphanage in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Patrick sent the children to Halifax because he expected to be sent to Cape of Good Hope, during the Boer Wars, where he had just heard of one group being wiped out. He had hopes of later retiring in Halifax to be near the children, but it wasn't to be.

His military records show the name: Dunn, but his signature was spelt Dunne. He was born born at Newton, Barry, Cardiff, and died at Bermuda on 20 March 1880. His next of kin was father, Patrick Dunn, residing at St. Andrews, Dublin.

His wife's funeral card reads:
In affectionate remembrance of EMMA, beloved wife of Color Sgt P.A.Dunne, 1st Batt. 19th Princess of Wales’ Own Regiment, who departed this life on the 26th November, 1877 aged 23 years and was interred at Ireland Island, Bermuda, W.I. November 27th. In life she suffered, may she rest in peace.

Another letter says that Emma died 3 days after landing at Bermuda. She was ill when she left England, but wanted to go with her husband.

It is possible that one of Emma's cousins was living in Massachusetts. He was possibly born in England between 1790-1802. He had a son, William P. Colwell, who was born in Massachusetts possibly between 1820-1832. William married Sarah Fellows, and had a son, Charles Augustus Colwell, who was born in Dixon, Illinois about 1853. Charles married Olivia Jane Dierdorff.

In 1880, Charles & Olivia were living in Franklin Grove, Lee, Illinois, with daughters Emma & Eva. The census shows that Charles' father was born in Massachusetts and his mother was born in New Hampshire. Charles is also listed on the 1870 census at Lee, Illinois, but I do not have access, so cannot see who else is in his household.

George Smith

NOTE: Lucy Johnson (nee Smith) is listed on the 1851 Census as James Bridgen's (b.1781) niece.
A "Lucy Smith" is listed on the IGI as daughter of George and Sally Smith, christened 9 Dec 1810 Portsea, Hampshire. This appears to be the same Lucy, which also means that her mother, Sally, must be Sally Bridgen, sister of James.

Possible children of George & Sally, although if Sally was born about 1791, she would have only been about 12. However, it is possible that she was born about 1787, and so would have been 16-17 when the first child was born.
