NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

Frederick Arthur Colwell

ABODES:
1881 ..... Water Lodge, Southwick.
1891 ..... Southwick.

NOTES ..... At the age of 90, he was due to have a prostate operation but decided to take his own life. He went down to the shed at the bottom of their home, in 34 West Street, Southwick, and shot himself.

He appears to be mentioned in a book entitled "Secretive Southwick" by Geoffrey O'Connell, a resident of Southwick. The details differ, perhaps due to failing memories of the reidents or artistic license:

Page 111.
..... I have drawn attention to 'Narrow's' excellence at hedging and ditching. Another contender for this title was 'Shiner' Colwell, who lived in Number 34 West Street, just before the cruck constructed cottages. For a time, he freelanced as a hedger and ditcher, getting a halfpenny for 22 yards of trimmed hedge, both sides and the border. 'Shiner' ended his life at the wrong end of a shotgun, it was rumoured to escape the demands of his wife, and they were well into their seventies! Saner counsel tends to side with those who suggest that his wife could be a very, very difficult woman [which of them are not, god bless them]. 'Shiners' son, nicknamed 'Tinker Moonshine', was apprenticed to Bill Page at the forge.....

The book gives a very thorough account of Southwick and surrounding villages from the Roman era to late 20th century.

Samuel Peppernell (Pepperell)

Samuel, remains illusive at present, as he does not appear on any census with Edwin or his mother, Jane. His mother could be Elizabeth (see below), who was lodging in Portsea in 1851. She is from Devon. It is noted that Edwin was "visiting" a Joseph Ellis of Devon in 1851 at Portsea. As Edwin was only aged 3, and not with his parents, Joseph was probably related to Samuel.
