NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle. This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.
I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.
If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.
Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

Only brother of John.
In 1830, John resided at Horton Hall, Little Horton, near Bradford, Yorkshire. He was exceptional among employers in the district, in that he provided health care, basic schooling and limited the hours a child could work, in his factories. Richard Oastler stayed at Horton Hall with John Wood in September 1830 and Wood made Oastler (who was also instrumental in the fight to abolish slavery) swear on a bible, that he would campaign for better conditions for children and other employees in the mills and factories of industrial Britain. This Oastler duly did, campaigning under the banner of ‘Yorkshire Slavery’. As a result eventually the Factory Act of 1844 was passed, which limited the hours that could be worked by children in the mills.
In 1840, John Wood, of Theddon Grange, purchased the manor of Shalden, Hampshire from Edward Knight, whose family had previously owned the manor for many years. On his death, in 1871, it passed to his son Mr. John Gathorne Wood.

Frank Hewson was a descendant of King Edward I and his first wife, Eleanor, via their daughter, Elizabeth (1284-1316). Other Royal connections exist in his Hewson ancestry, which is documented back to the 15th century, when they were resident in the City of York, Yorkshire.
A detailed account of the Hewson ancestry can be found in the book, "Miscellanea Genealogica Et Heraldica" edited by W. Bruce, which can be viewed HERE
NOTE: There were two Rev. Frank / Francis Hewson's living in Ireland in the 1870's. The other Francis was born 1806 in Tarbert, Kerry, and was a 1st cousin of the other. He married Mary Elizabeth Hardy, son of John.
Mary & John also appear to have come from the same area of Yorkshire, as several of their children had York & Rawdon as middle names. This John was not Emily's father, as his daughter, Mary Ann, never married.
Emily was definitely the daughter of John of Bradford, as her sister, Matilda, was living with Emily & Frank in 1861.
A notice appeared in Trewman's Exeter Flying Post - Thursday, June 17th, 1852
At the end of an article about events in Chittlehampton, it has the following paragraph:
Hudscot, in this parish, a pleasant seat of the late Miss Rolle, is now occupied by the Rev. Frank Hewson. The reverent gentleman is a profound scholar and an eloquent preacher. On Trinity Sunday he preached at Southmolton to a crowded congregation. His discourse was a masterly elucidation of the catholic doctrine of the Trinity.

NOTE: This Hewson family may be related to the singer Bono, of U2, who was born, Paul David Hewson, in Glasnevin, Dublin, on 10 May 1960. He married Alison Stewart, who was also born in Dublin on 23 Mar 1961, daughter of Terry & Joy Stewart, of Killiney, Co. Dublin.Bono and his brother, Norman, were raised in the lower-middle class Northside suburb of Glasnevin, Dublin by their parents, Brendan Robert "Bobby" Hewson and Iris (née Rankin). Their mother was Church of Ireland Anglican, and father was Roman Catholic.
Bono's grandfather is said to be Robert Francis Hewson, who is probably the 15 year old Telegraph Messenger on the 1911 Census at 45 Church Street, Arran Quay, Dublin. The census shows his father as Thomas (39, b. Dublin City) a Commercial Clerk, and Mary (37, illiterate, b. Co. Kildare). They had been married 16 full years and had 7 children, one of whom died in infancy.
It seems unlikely that they were close relatives of their wealthy landowner cousins, and are almost certainly not descendants of Frank.
Probably died in Ireland

In 1861, Charles moved South and purchased the estate of Chilham Castle in Kent. The house was built between 1612-16 by Sir Dudley Digges, on the site of the old castle bailey. It is situated next to the old castle keep on the 320 acre park estate, near Canterbury.
Charles engaged the architect, David Brandon, to make alterations to the house, making it more suitable for his large family. Brandon was already building Hemsted House (now Benenden School) for Charles's brother, Gathorne, who later became the first Earl of Cranbrook. Charles also made several improvements to the village, but his radical alterations to the house and the parish church were criticised by many.
In 1867, shortly after the building was completed, Charles died and the estate passed to his son, Col. Charles Stewart Hardy.
A detailed account of all the owners of Chilham Castle, including several photos of the Hardy family, can be found on the castle's website HERE

Only brother of Richard.
A painting of John, by George Romney, can be found here. http://www.philipmould.com/catalogue.php?sid=c0000&p=t
John Gathorne was a London-based merchant trading with Madeira, the Azores and South America, from an office in Crutched Friars, London. He was born in 1726 in Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmorland, to Miles and Isabel Gathorne. John’s brother, Richard (d.1786 aged 56), also of Kirkby Lonsdale, married Elizabeth, and it is their daughter Isabel who married, in 1804, John Hardy of Dunstall Hall, Staffordshire. From this family begin the Gathorne Hardy family, who later become Earls of Cranbrook.
The portrait is one of Romney’s earlier works, and shows a sitter from his native north-west of England. Romney began his artistic career in Kendal, Cumberland, while John Gathorne came from a well to do family in Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmorland. Though the picture was painted in about 1768, some six years after the artist had moved to London, it must have been initial local ties that drew artist and sitter together. As the Reverend John Romney wrote about Romney’s Cumberland neighbours “…there was a general feeling in his favour: and every individual of any consequence in the town and neighbourhood, felt a personal participation in the anticipated celebrity of a youth, who had sprung up, as it were, from the bosom of their society.” [George Romney, 1830, p. 20]
John Gathorne is shown with all the mastery of pose and composition that propelled Romney to prominence in London in the late 1760s. The artist has painted Gathorne exactly as he has found him, sitting inquisitively and comfortably in a studio chair, with none of the augustan stiffness required by patrons from earlier generations of portrait artists. It is a truthful and sophisticated portrait of someone Romney clearly admired.
Died on his 51st birthday.
