NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY WEBSITE ONLY, and is meant as a stopgap until the Main Website has been updated. Some of the notes are incomplete and many of the links will not work. There is still much data to add and conflicts to settle.

This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologies to those whose information has not yet been added.

I have tried to verify as much information as possible but errors may exist. Individuals with uncertain details have a (see notes) label attached to their name.

If photos exist, they will be found in the individual's Scrapbook. Click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu for a list. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am now adding more presentable feature pages containing notes, photos and links. These pages are shown to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few. NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.

Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.

If you do find errors, conflicts or would like to update your line please let me know. Webmaster

Col. Charles Stewart Hardy

In 1867, Charles inherited the estate of Chilham Castle, Kent, from his father, who had moved there six years earlier. The house was built between 1612-16 by Sir Dudley Digges, on the site of the old castle bailey. It is situated next to the old castle keep on the 320 acre park estate, near Canterbury.

Charles was then a recently qualified lawyer, who later became Justice of Peace, High Sheriff and deputy Lieutenant for Kent. He held a commission in the 37th regiment and later became Honorary Colonel of the Royal East Kent Mounted Rifles. He was a keen cricketer and enjoyed hunting on the huge estate with his hounds. Like his father, he was also responsible for much repair and rebuilding in the village and estate.
Charles died, in 1914, and an obituary in the Kentish Gazette described him as “a typical example of the old school of country Squire. Geniality literally radiated from him and his ever ready kindness with all with whom he came in contact, and his benevolence to those in need, earned him a measure of popularity and affection which it is few men’s pleasure to enjoy.”

The estate then passed to his son, Charles, who soon put it on the market. It then comprised of 3,270 acres with 14 farms, 420 acres in hand, 650 acres of woodland, and over 60 dwellings in the village, rented or occupied by workers on the estate. However, with the outbreak of the First World War, he could not find a buyer and had to sell in pieces over the next five years.
Before leaving the house, he published a short history of Chilham, based on the work of earlier researchers, and later produced a second edition in 1935. These have provided a valuable asset to the history of the castle and its estate.

A detailed account of all the owners of Chilham Castle, including several photos of the Hardy family, can be found on the castle's website HERE

In 1920, a black & white marble memorial was erected at St. Mary's Church, Chilham, Kent, for Miles. The following message at RootsWeb gives some details of his death. If you have further information, please contact Ken or myself, or leave a message on my forum.
