The Fripp family of South Carolina

Notes

William Chaplin Fripp (See Notes)

We know for certain that the father of Paul Archibald Fripp was named William. However, no records of his birth or death have yet been found. We have no documented evidence to prove that William Chaplin Fripp is the son of William Fripp and Mary Chaplin, or that he is the father of Paul Archibald Fripp, but the details below make it almost certain. A different lineage was listed by Rebecca Margaret Fripp (nee Linley), which can be viewed HERE

1, Paul Archibald Fripp is known to have had an uncle, John Archibald Fripp. This must be John A. Fripp (1794-1870), who was a son of William Fripp and Mary Chaplin.

2, Paul Archibald Fripp had a sister Laura, who stayed with John Archibald Fripp on John's Island. This appears to be the same Laura Fripp listed on the 1880 census with Charles Tennant. She would be 1st cousin of Charles' wife, Mary Julia Fripp. As John Archibald Fripp (above) died in 1870, Laura may have moved to North Carolina to stay with Charles and Mary.

3, Laura (Eliza) Fripp is mentioned, in a letter below, as being a daughter of Eliza Hann Edwards. We know from the Charleston Courier that Eliza Hann Edwards married William Chaplin Fripp in 1806. Her father was James Edwards, but William's father is not mentioned. However, this makes it almost certain that Paul & Laura's father was William Chaplin Fripp.

4, Although his birth records have not been found, it is quite likely that William Fripp and Mary Chaplin would have had a son named William, born about 1780-85, and may have given him a middle name, Chaplin, after his mother.

5, Paul Archibald's first son, William, was given the middle names "James Edwards", probably after Eliza's father.

The above clues seem quite conclusive, but records of William's birth or death are essential to prove this connection. A birth date of 1792 has been suggested, although this would make him only 14 at his marriage in 1806, so seems unlikely.

From Edgar Allen Fripp III:
(1931-34) Letter to Rebecca Linley Fripp from Laura Bell Tennent (granddaughter of John Archibald Fripp and daughter of Mary Julia Fripp who married Dr. Charles Tennent).

John Archibald Fripp left St. Helena to take care of his father's Plantation on the Edisto (Johns Island)

William Fripp left a daughter, Laura Eliza Fripp, who orphaned at the age of 19 (1843) was living with an Aunt or relative, Mrs Janus/Tanis, in Beaufort. John Archibald Fripp went to fetch her to live with him on Johns Island.

She mentions that Laura Eliza Fripp’s mother was Eliza Hamm (probably Eliza Hann Edwards)

Notes from Lucy Charpie:
William C. Fripp was on the vestry or wardens of St. Helena Protestant Episcopal church in 1817, and is listed on a petition for incorporation (SCDA&H, Series 165015, item 00183)

William & Eliza were probably deceased by 1830, but if not, the following could be them. 1830 Census: William Fripp

1 free white female 30 to 40 (Possibly Eliza Hann Edwards)

From Edgar Allen Fripp III:
(1931-34) Letter to Rebecca Linley Fripp from Laura Bell Tennent, granddaughter of John Archibald Fripp and daughter of Mary Julia Fripp who married Dr. Charles Tennent.

John Archibald Fripp left St. Helena to take care of his fathers Plantation on the Edisto (Johns Island)

William Fripp left daughter, Laura Eliza Fripp, who orphaned at the age of 19 (1843) was living with an Aunt in Beaufort. John Archibald Fripp went to get her to live with him on Johns Island.

Mentioned Laura Eliza Fripp’s mother being Eliza Hamm (Eliza Hann Edwards)

NOTE: Edgar's grandmother, Rebecca Margaret Fripp (nee Linley), listed the Fripp lineage as follows:

Gen. I: John Fripp, widower from England via Barbados (1670?)
Gen.II: John Jr. married Jenkins
Gen.III: William married Hamilton
Gen.IV: John married Jenkins
Gen.V: William married Eddings
Gen.VI: William married Edwards, Rebecca
Gen.VII: Paul married Kugley, Jane
Gen.VIII: William married Jordan, Sarah
Gen.VIII: Edgar married Linley, Rebecca

This differs from the lineage shown on this website and shows the need to produce solid evidence to prove which version is correct.
It is possible that Eliza was known as Rebecca, which was her mother's name.

James Fripp

A small tree, compiled by Rebecca Margaret Fripp (nee Linley), names James as "of Rushland". This was a plantation on John's Island. See: http://south-carolina-plantations.com/charleston/rushlands.html

Laura Eliza Fripp

There is much confusion as to when Laura was born. Most census returns show her born about 1815, but other reports point to her birth in 1824. She is buried at Oak Forest Presbyterian Church Cemetary, Sand Hill Road, Ashville, North Carolina, with her 1st cousin, Mary Julia Tennent (nee Fripp) and Mary's husband, Dr. Charles Edward Tennent, also their eldest son, Charles.

Laura's grave, although in very poor condition, is inscribed:

Laura E. Fripp
1824 - 1899
"Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord."

However, the year of birth was probably given to the officials by Mary, whom she had lived with for at least 20 years, and it seems likely that Mary was confused about how old Laura was.

A letter from her cousin, Laura Bell Tennant, says that Laura E. Fripp was 3 years older than Laura B. Tennent's mother, Mary Julia Fripp, who was born in 1827. This is where the year 1824 came from.

Laura Eliza was shown as an invalid in 1870, so may have been mentally handicapped from birth. If so, she may not have known her own date of birth. Perhaps this is also why the homes of Dr. Sams & Dr. Tennent were ideal, if she needed regular medical attention. It is also possibly the result of a difficult birth, in which her mother may have died.

Further information from Laura Bell's letters (dated 1931-34) shows that Laura was orphaned by the age of 19 (probably much earlier), and at the age of 19 was living with an aunt, Mrs. Sams, in Beafort. This was almost certainly Martha Fripp Edwards, sister of her mother, Eliza Hann Edwards. Martha married Dr. Berners Barnwell Sams in November 1831, she is previously said to be the widow of William Eddings Fripp, although not yet confirmed.

At the age of 19, she was collected from Mrs. Sams by her uncle, John Archibald Fripp (grandfather of Laura Bell Tennent) to stay with him on John's Island. By 1870, she was living in Ashville, North Carolina with her sister, Mary Julia Tennent, and her family.

The letters also show that Laura Eliza had a brother Paul. Their father was William, and mother Eliza Hann. (Hann is almost certainly a middle name, her surname being Edwards)

Laura is listed on the 1880 census as (1st) cousin of Charles' wife, Mary Julia Fripp. It also shows a widowed Mary Fripp b. abt. 1807. This is clearly not Charles' mother, so must be Mary Eddings, mother of Mary Julia Fripp.

Thomas James E. Fripp (See Notes)

No records of Thomas' birth have yet been found, but he is thought to have been a brother of Paul Archibald Fripp. There is some confusion as to whether this is actually James Thomas Eddings Fripp, son of James Fripp and Ann Pope, who was also born 1822 and killed in battle on 13 Jun 1863. James' death is well documented, HERE, but it is not known where he is buried. Is this the same person buried at Sandy Dam as Thomas J.E. Fripp, who died 3 days earlier, and was 13 June the burial date?

Thomas' middle names were thought to be James Edwards, named after his maternal grandfather, but the source of this information has been temporarily mislaid.

He also appears to be mentioned in the book "Letters from Port Royal, 1862-1868" by Elizabeth Ware Pearson, p.204
July 14, 1863
G. came over here and spent the day. He told us that a man who belonged on his place came back with the troops on one of their late expeditions, and told him that his master, T.J. Fripp, was killed at Darien. He said he (Fripp) had been pass here in a boat and came back with his hands all blistered from rowing; they had been hailed by the Kingfisher, but told some story of having come from here, and escaped. He said his master swore the Yankees were everywhere, and there was a light in every window of Tom Coffin's house.

Notes from Edgar Allen Fripp III:
Misc.Church Records: Thomas Fripp (Thomas J.E. Fripp), buried: Sandy Dam Methodist Church, died 10 June, 1863 (Civil War), Per records of St.Judes Episcopal Church: 41 yrs, 1 month, 23 days. (B: 13 April, 1822 - Thomas is listed as a likely brother of Paul Archibald Fripp).

Sandy Dam Methodist Church is near Grahamville, a location near where Thomas Fripp was killed at the 'Battle of Honey Hill'. See 'South Carolina Historical Society Magazine, issue of October, 1993, page 283-84, submitted by Ed, or as depicted in 'Stories of the Confederacy - Ed. by U.R. Brooks, 1912: " The Third S.C. Calvary was organized and mustered into service at Grahamville, S.C. - spring of 1862. ...in the fall (or summer) of 1863, the enemy sent Gunboats up the Bees Creek. Company C,D & H engaged the enemy .......Tom Fripp killed, ( Co. C )"

Rev. Edgar Thomas Riley Fripp

Notes from Edgar Allen Fripp III:
Martha Kugley, living in Charleston, took guardianship of her two grandsons, William James Edwards Fripp, and Edgar Thomas Riley Fripp. (see South Carolina Guardianship of 1827-1845). Edgar Fripp of St. Helena and Beaufort may have had original care of the two in that I have an old tin plate of Edgar upon which on the back is scratched such information.

Edgar Thomas Riley Fripp, was born March 6, 1837, and was baptized by the Rev. Thomas Leadbetter, (Methodist Missionary of Beaufort), April 17,1837. (Further details of Rev. Thomas Leadbetter, below)

John Kugley

ABODES:
1802 - 1819: Mazyck Street, Charleston, South Carolina

The street number varies from 14 - 17 over the above period. In 1822 the occupant of 34 Mazyck Street is named as John Kugley (female) indicating that John had died.

Above information from Ken Stubbs at: Ancestry World Tree

Martha

A Martha Kugley (Coogley) is mentioned on several pages of the book 'Methodism and the Southern Mind-1770-1810' by Cynthia Lynn Lyerly. Page 117 describes her heroic actions confronting a crowd trying to drown her Methodist Preacher - and she, setting them straight, and likely saving his life! However, this incident took place in 1800 when Martha would have been aged about 5, so must be another person, probably related to her husband, John Kugley.

Information from Edgar Allen Fripp III:
Martha Kugley, living in Charleston, took guardianship of her two grandsons, William James Edwards Fripp, and Edgar Thomas Riley Fripp. (see South Carolina Guardianship of 1827-1845). Edgar Fripp of St. Helena and Beaufort may have had original care of the two in that I have an old tin plate of Edgar upon which on the back is scratched such information.

E.T.R. Fripp age 13 male B: South Carolina
S.E. Gillman age 14 female B: South Carolina
M.J. Gillman age 7 female B: South Carolina

Further information from Ed has revealed Martha's relationship with the Gillman family:
CHARLESTON OBSERVER "Samuel M. Gilman married 24 January, 1835 Annie O. Kugley, youngest daughter of Martha Kugley."

However, this creates further confusion. If Alice & Annie are the same person, she would have only been aged abt 13 at the time of her marriage. If Annie was a sister of Alice, she would have been even younger, as the Newspaper announcement states that Annie is Martha's youngest daughter. Perhaps Alice was a sister of Samuel Gillman, and aunt of the two youngest Gillmans on the above census. There are other cases in SC where the bride appears to have married in early teens, so perhaps this was accepted in this period. Ed also found another reference to Samuel in the 1840 Census, City of Charleston, Ward 2, and the residence of Rev. Samuel Gilman 'unoccupied'.
